For a very long time, I've thought I had PCOS. I have almost all of the symptoms except for being overweight. I know extreme body hair is a sign and that I do definitely have... I have VERY irregular periods and my husband and I have been having unprotected sex for over a year without conceiving. I've told my doctor that I thought I had it but he said I didn't b/c I wasn't overweight. Is this really a deciding factor?? And how do they test for PCOS??

I am underweight and was diagnosed with pcos based on blood work (slightly elevated total testosterone and high lh:fsh ratio). I don't even have excess body hair or cysts on my ovaries. However, when I went off the pill, I did not get a period, which prompted my doctor to check hormone levels. This is a very complicated disorder and I think blood work can reveal what is going on in your body. The good news is, if this is what you have, it can be treated and you can improve the quality of your life with the help of a doctor who knows about this syndrome (i.e. a reproductive endocrinologist). There are different forms of PCOS. It is a SYNDROME so you may have totaly different symptoms then someone else.

I was DX with it 2 yaers ago,at the age of 38 but was told I probably have had it for years.
My symptoms:
Irregular periods (can go 60 days without one, have even went 1 year without one)
facial hair
ovarian cysts (had my first cyst at 18years old)
ovulation problems (developed severe ovulation pain at age 22, at least when I ovulated) I was told 2 years ago that the severe ovulation pain was cysts and I didnt even know it.
High Cholesteral
High Trys
Low HDLs
borderline insulin resistance
acne problems
swollen belley
weight problems

I was on the pill for 4 yaers before they tried testing me for it. The problem was the pill can cause irregular reading for hormone levels, and the Endocrinologist did not want me off the pill due to severe problems with cysts. But, with my blood sugar level and cholesteral levels and physical features and pregnancy history and menstral history he agreed I had PCOS.

They can do hormone testing..have you had blood sugar testing done and cholesteral testing done??
How irregular is your period?? Any cyst problems?/ You dont have to be cystic to have PCOS.

This just makes me think I'm right even more than before. My doctor actually told me that my testosterone levels were high! He acted as if this wasn't an issue, let alone be concerned about my VERY abnormal mestruation! He totally based it off the fact that I have no cysts and made me feel like I was crazy for even asking about it! I've known there was something wrong with me for such a long time, the problem is, I can't find a doctor that will actually take it as seriously as I would like! Sometimes, I go months without having a period, other times, it's every other week and extremely heavy and painful. Not to mention, my obvious infertility... seeing as how my husband and I have been ttc for over a year. Any suggestions... I already know it's time to find myself a different doctor but is there some sort of natural cure for this???

Are you on the pill?? That will help with the hormone levels. Also there is Metformin too. These you need a script from the doc. As for natural remidies...I dont know of any, but I am sure there is. I would surf the net about it.

The best advice see an Endocrinologist and another OB. I had to get 2nd opinion too regarding my OB. He was blaming all my pain on IBS. It was Severe Adenomyosis (Endometriosis Interna) and PCOS and Pelvic Congestion Syndrome.
