Don't know what I have?

I'm in my twenties with the foll. symptoms:
1. irregular periods,
2. excess facial & body hair (legs, arms, hands, upper lip/chin, side burns, & practically the entire forehead),
3. cystic acne,
4. hair loss,
5. easy weight gain
6. skin hyperpigmentation in upper lip/chin (controlled with topical creams)
-I have had these symptoms for the last 4 yrs, a gynec. prescribed yasmin & symptoms 1 & 3 became normal.

7. feeling hot (it is like a temperature when u have the flu, lasts a few hours & then disappears).
8. slight/moderate ache in my fingers, toes, hands, legs (sometimes the muscles twitch or tingle, sometimes it hurts to type or do other things. don't know if it arthritic type of pain, but is bearable for the most part)
9. depression & mood swings
- I have had these for at least 2 yrs now (I don't know if it is the yasmin or something else)

Due to recent acne flare up & scant periods, I went to the gynec again who ordered an MRI and blood test. Now he has diagnosed me with pituitary tumor (prolactin 257). I don't have diabetes or thyroid. He also thinks I have PCOS although I don't know why he did not recommend any bloodwork or give me any medication. There is no history of tumor or PCOS in my family.

My question is: do I have PCOS? or are these symptoms due to the tumor? is it possible to have both pcos & p. tumor at the same time?

Pleeeeeeez help! I'm desperate to have answers. thank u very much!

Re: Don't know what I have?

Did they check your cortisol levels?

Re: Don't know what I have?

the doc ordered a "complete" blood test. I don't know what that entailed, but it costed over 1000 bucks (most of it the insurance took care of). what are normal cortisol levels and how would I know if mine are normal or not? thank u so much!

Re: Don't know what I have?

So you are just going to a gyno?
He should absolutely send you to an endocrinologist.
When diagnosed with a pit tumor you should always have a full hormone work up done, by a knowledgeable endocrinologist.(hard to find)

It is possible that you have pcos and a pit tumor. Lots of people have pit tumors and don't even know it. So don't freak out about that.

It is also possible that there is something else going on.
What size is your tumor? I am guessing small? under 10mm?
You should start getting copies of all of your test results for yourself.
You may find that drs "overlook" some things...

Look up cushings and see if this relates to you...
There are medicines for prolactinomas (if that is what you have)

I don't want to be negative, but what I have learned in my process is that drs do not try to figure out what is going on. I had to become very knowledgable with my own health and agressive in finding answers.

Just my .02.

Good luck!

Re: Don't know what I have?

Thanks annemv for your prompt replies. I will definitely get a copy of my medical records and get a second opinion. I totally agree with you abt. doctors overlooking stuff. I have been misdiagnosed many times Someday I hope to find answers. Take care
