Need help with lab results - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Message Board

Based on history and physical findings (amenorrhea, mild acne, a little bit of tummy hair) my RE made the diagnosis of PCOS. I had lab results come in for testosterone and DHEAS:

Testosterone total: 17 (ref range 15-70)
DHEAS: 273 (not sure of the reference range but the dr said it is a little elevated).

Bloodwork from 6 months ago:

FSH 6.3
LH 5.1
TSH 0.76
Prolactin 4.1
Total estrogen 62 (ref range 0-400)

1 year ago:

FSH 5.1
LH 2.0
TSH 0.66
Prolactin 4.6

4 years ago
Insulin (fasting) 5
Glucose (fasting) 88
Testosterone 67
FSH 3.9
LH 8.8

I am very very confused now. How can I have PCOS with such low testosterone. What does it mean to have elevated DHEAS? Will metformin do anything for me at all?

that seems weird... my testosterone level was 74

I would talk to the doctor that diagnosed you. Something doesn't sound right.

According to one of the endos I used to see, there is another test measures testosterone...something about testosterone offsetting another hormone and if THAT was elevated, then it can indicate abnormal testosterone levels.

I remember this because he said that my testosterone levels were normal according to the first test (the one that measures it directly), yet he ran this other test to try and concluded that my testosterone levels were indeed elevated.

I don't know why it works that way, but it does for some people, for some reason.

I would highly suggest talking to your endo about this. I'm sure she/he could explain it to you a lot better.
