Arrow Q's about metformin

i was recently diagnosed with PCOS, i would LOVE children, but have not been trying very seriously yet. i started taking metformin yesterday, and will be taking four 500 mg pills each day in a month (once i work up to it ) i was wondering on average how long it has taken other women to start getting their periods after starting on metformin?????

Re: Q's about metformin

Hi Sheila
Welcome to the boards!
I have been on metformin for six or seven months and I only had periods when I was on birth control. Technically it's a withdrawl bleed and not a real period. I had a period in January only being on metformin but nothing since. I also have problems with my thyroid and we are trying to get that under control. My ob thinks once we get the thyroid problem figured out then we can get the pcos under control too and my period will show up!! We are trying for a baby and I just wish I could hurry this all along!
Good luck!
Sara
btw, i take 1700 mg a day. I don't know if you've had problems with the metformin but it's easier on the stomach if you eat something or drink milk with the pills!

Re: Q's about metformin

Hi Sheila, I myself have been on metformin in the past, had a lot of other things going on as well, so stopped for a while. Long story short, I just started back on the met about two months ago. Prior to the met, I was cycling about every 3-4 months. About a month after being on the met I had a very light cycle. Three weeks later(now) I am having a very strong cycle, like I used to before all this crap started 4 years ago. I was experiencing pms symptoms that I hadn't had in 4 years prior to this cycle. My doc only has me on 1000 mg/day. He never mentioned anything about increasing over time. I will at least be on the 1000 for 6 months. I have already noticed a big change in my daily hormone levels, which were usually through the roof.

So to answer your question, give your body a good month or two to get used to the new medication and don't be freaked if your cycles get a little off in the beginning. I was a strict 32 dayer prior to all this and this current cycle was 21 days. So just give it a few months and have patience with it.

Hi my name is Mandie and I was also just put on the Metformin! I am taking it starting out with 500mg and working up to 2000mg. My doctor told me it was to bring my insulin levels down. I am also taking a estrogen pill (2 weeks a month) and progestrone pill (1 week a month). I have about 130 pounds to lose and I hope I can get off some of this.

Re: Q's about metformin

Hi I know all this can be scary but I have been on Metformin for about a year now. I haven't tried to have children yet either. But as far as using Met for PCOS it has worked. My periods are regular now and don't go on forever which used to drive me crazy. I have lost weight that I had been trying to lose forever. Before being placed on metformin I was taking only birth control pills to help regulate my period. I believe the BCP brought on a hormonal depression which got worse with PMS. It was ugly. Metformin was like a magic pill that made my world seem normal again. Only thing now is because I have witness a friend who had 2 unexpected preg while on metformin for the same reason. I worry about getting preg.
