I just got back from my 2nd RE appt..Can anyone w/ experience w/Glucophage help???? - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Message Board

HEllo everyone...I had an appt this morning after the results of my sonogram and blood test where in...my testosterone levels are higher than normal and I have cysts all over my ovaries..
The answer from my RE was to start on Glucophage...He told me I could die..HE told me no alcohol, he told me I would lose weight...and that was basically what i got from it...I f there are any experienced Glucophage/Metformin users who could help me pls shoot me a line..Thanks

Metformin is great. It really will help you out alot. It will actually treat the disorder, not just the symptoms. As for the you could die thing.... That seems pretty extreme, I am surprised he said that. There are a whole lot of us ladies out there with PCOS. With the metformin, diet and exercise, you can live a pretty good life with pcos.

I agree 100% with Lisa about living a normal life with PCOS.

Here is my story so you can stay hopeful.
My Dh and I were ttc for 2 1/2 years. I was diagnosed in Sept 07 with PCOS by a RE. I also found out I was insulin resistent and put on glucophage/metformin 1700mg daily. The side effects are terrible and I constantly had an upset tummy, but I lost 5kg in two months. Since being on glucophage I have done 3 cycle of injectables to get me to O and last week I got my BFP. My dr has taken me off the glucophage and will monitor my insulin levels carefully through out my pregnancy. So do not give up hope.

I've been on Glucophage (metformin) 1500mg tablets (500mg 3x a day after meals) for a year now to treat my insulin resistance associated with PCOS and while the naseau is a little irritating in the beginning it did go away for me. It's best to take it right after meals it buffers it a lot. You will start noticing weight loss mostly because your body is now processing sugar and insulin more normally as it wasn't before with the insulin resistance. You may feel a little tired at first, but as with almost any new medication you take these types of side effects are normal and your body is just getting used to changing it's cycle for the first time. So far it's been a life saver and for the first time in my life i'm losing weight like a normal person and able to have normal periods. The little side effects in the beginning are well worth it to help the disorder!
