what do they test for in PCOS

Hi Moogirl:

Welcome! I am a 20 year veteren of PCOS and things have probably changed somewhat since I was first diagnosed. But, I'll try and give you what help I can.

To the best of my knowledge, there is still no one blood test used to diagnose, but the doc should run bloodwork to check a few different things...Mostly hormone levels...Insulin Resistance, testosterone levels etc.

An ultra-sound is also a good way to diagnose. If you have PCOS, there are usually cysts on one or both of your ovaries.

I too am a 20 year veteran of PCOS. What a pain!! My PCOS was diagnosed via ultrasound and blood work. My symptoms have been irregular or no periods, odd hair growth, light acne, and weight issues. I am happy to say that I was able to have two children successfully. The treatments nowadays are so much better. They usually involve possibly taking birth control pills to regulate periods, spiranolactone for facial hair, glucophage for insulin resistance and others. Don't give up!! There is life with PCOS.
