Diagnosis - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Message Board

Can PCOS be diagnosed through a regular old pelvic ultrasound, or does it have to be a transvaginal ultrasound?

I have acne (previously extremely bad, now mild after 2 courses of accutane), mild hirsutism, and over the past few years I've missed a few periods a year and developed a small amount extra weight around my middle. I think it could be mild PCOS. I have a pelvic ultrasound scheduled next week that was ordered by a urogynecologist to check for interstitial cystitis (having cytoscopy week after next) and am wondering if this ultrasound might also show PCOS if I have it?

I was diagnosed twice (once in the sixties when it was called hormone imbalance and that was all I was told PCOS wasn't recognized as a condition) and again in 2002, I recall that one of the tests in both cases was a 24 hour urine test and blood work. Ask the Dr. share your concern that you think you may have it and learn more about PCOS- don't be in the dark like I was and spend 35 years thinking less of yourself , blaming yourself thinking you are a weak person because you can't control weight etc. Since I have learned about PCOS I have been able to realise alot of physical things in my life were out of my control-(diabetes, high blood pressure) so learn what you can and ask questions. So i had a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound. Granted I have no idea what to look at and I couldn't see very well while laying down with my feet in stirrups, but there did not appear to be any cysts in my ovaries, or at least not any I could see. I'm sure I'll hear from the doctor shortly, but would I have been able to tell?

Also, just curious, my right ovary appeared as a large black mass on the screen, nearly perfectly round, while my left ovary looked like an oblong shape, much thinner and longer than the right. Does this sound right?
