General questions about pcos... doctors are rubbish

Hi everyone,
I am new to all this so answers would be greatly appreciated..

Basically I have been having pains, aches and heavy and painful periods since about 14 years of age (I am 19 years old now) I suffered with an eating disorder a couple of years ago and I had to get a scan on my ovaires to check whether everything was working when I was ill and underweight and this is when i found out that I had polycystic ovaries.

I wasnt too sure what it was so i searched it up and found out that it is actually very common. I do not have a bad case of it (hair growth, overweight, spots etc) but I gathered that all the pain I was getting for the past 3 or 4 years was down to this. But it has started to get worse, my periods are only coming every couple of months (i just came on my period after missing it for four months, which can get very worrying at times) and my tummy and back pains are getting more painful. At one point I could barely stand up and almost passed out when I managed as the pain was horrific. So I made an appointment at the doctors. He told me that all the pain I had been having was actually nothing to do with Polycystic Ovaries, so basically I had been told the wrong thing for years... I asked my doctor what the hell was wrong with me and he said it is probably endmitriosis (apologies for the spelling) ... I have been given a special contraceptive pill which only made the pains worse so have stopped taking this and am not on any contracapetion (this sounds very immature and stupid but i swear to god I never get pregnant and I have a massive fear that I wont be able to) ... I have been given tablets specifically for the pains but it only made me worse.. and on my last visit the doctor gave me tablets for IBS which didnt work. I am going back there on Friday to ask to be referred to the hospital to see a specialist and possibly get key hole surgery as I want to know what is wrong with me and what is causing all of this pain and discomfort.

Its frustrating and annoying that the doctors really dont have a clue what they are talking about.

Does anyone have any advice they can give me or has anyone had the same issues?

Re: General questions about pcos .. doctors are rubbish

I am in the same boat as you. I have polycystic ovaries without the acne/hair, I am a tad overweight though. My doctors agreed the pain could be down to Endometriosis. You should research into Endo and try and learn as much as you can about it. You live in the UK just like me, so you will most likely see a Consultant Gynecologist first time and they will decide whether to do a laparoscopy on you or not. My appointment is in February 2012. Good luck with your appointment. Signs to look for include; pain when sitting on the toilet, when peeing/the other thing, and no pain relief from Ibuprofen and alike when on your period (when you do get it.)

Hope I helped.

Yeah, I have researched into endo and there a lot of symptons that I can relate to. I guess all I have to do is wait for Friday when I go to the doctors. I won't leave untill they give me a refferal note! I am going to be push because you have to be these days!
Hope your all okay
