Need A Little Help Getting Over Past Trauma

Hi. I wasn't sure if this was the place to post this message...A few years ago I experienced a psychologically and emotionally traumatic event that I would relive in my head for the next two years. Over time I've withdrawn from friends and social situations, I've felt emotionally numb and lack any ability to relate to ppl anymore. I think I'm bordering on depression and definately feel anxiety about social situations. I avoid anything that would remind of the event that I found traumatic. It's gotten to the point where I avoid talking to anyone and just sit in my room and do nothing b/c I've lost interest in things that I used to enjoy. I don't know if what I'm describing actually is PTSD. But I was wondering (since I'm afraid to see a doctor or psychologist about this) if there were self-help books out there that deal with healing psychological trauma that anyone could recommend to me? Thanks for any help you can offer, I know I haven't gone into much detail, so I don't expect a diagonsis or anything...I just want to help myself somehow (b/c things seem to be getting worse) and hope that if anyone can point me in the direction of any self-help book or internet source that could help me...well, I'd appreciate it.

Re: Need A Little Help Getting Over Past Trauma

Hi,
I don't really know of any "self-help" books. Someone gave me a book called "When Bad Things Happen to Good People". It's written by Harold S. Kushner. He's a rabbi and the book is a bit on the religious side but it does help to gain some understanding of why things happen. I'm sure if you searched Barnes and Noble, or Amazon you could find a better book.
What you described in your post definetley sounds like PTSD and sounds like you are depressed. I'm not sure why you don't want to see a doctor about this, but I know for me, when I try to handle things on my own, they only get worse. I hope that you are feeling better soon! ~Bunny
