Two weeks ago my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex, yes stupid I know, and i've been thinking about the possibility of being pregnant, but recently I went to the toilet and noticed some light vaginal bleeding. I've read alot about pregnancy symptoms and I know that "Spotting" is one. I don't know if this is my period or not, since i'm not due my period for a while yet.
What are the chances of it being my period or spotting?
Is it early enough for a home pregnancy test to pick up the pregnancy hormone or should I wait untill my regular due date to do a home test?
It's true that spotting is sometimes a symptom of pregnancy (it's called implantation bleeding). but it's also something that happens around the beginning or the end of a period.
The unfortunate thing with this is that a lot of the symptoms for PMS and pregnancy are exactly the same: bloating, fatigue, nausea, spotting, etc.
Home pregnancy tests are really not designed to be taken until you have actually missed your period. Some say that they can tell if you're pregnant up to 5 days before your missed period (First Response brand), but those tests are less accurate when taken before your period. There IS the possibility of getting a false negative (meaning the test says negative but you ARE pregnant) if you take it too soon. But there is no such thing as a false positive. If that stick says "Pregnant", then you're pregnant.
My suggestion is this: wait until your period is due. If you are a few days late, then take a test. Don't take it before your period because #1, it might be pointless if you just get your period 2 days later and #2, the results aren't as accurate.
And from here on out...remember this feeling! Use protection!

Thanks for your speedy responce.
The only problem is that I can't tell if this IS my period or not.
The bleeding has continued, like a normal period but i've read that spotting can last for several hours or days, also like a normal period - so what if it continues towards my due date? How will I know if my period is late or not?
You keep track of your periods right? And if they are fairly regular, i would wait until your period was SUPPOSE to start (you said you werent due for a while yet) and then take the test or wait a few days after the day you were suppose to origionally start.
It could be an early period or implantation bleeding.
