It most certainly can.
It's rather crude, but imagine the vagina as a fluid vacuum. It's designed to take in sperm and hold on to as much as it can. You don't actually have to release inside the vagina for pregnancy to occur, any sperm around the vagina can find it's way in, so be careful and use protection as much as possible.
It depends how long after ejaculation the sperm was around the vagina, the shelf life of sperm outside the body is 20 minutes-1 hour, dried semen contains no living sperm.
It only takes 1 sperm to fertilize an egg... You'll just have to see how it goes, just make sure you're both aware of the possibility.
