STILL Lactating After 3 years?!?!

My sister and I were having a conversation about pregnancy before & afters. She has a 3 year old little girl and she said she's STILL lactating! Is that normal? It doesn't seem to bother her, I guess after 3 years you'd get used to it. I'm hoping this isn't hereditary because I don't want to go through that. Before you ask, my sister tried to breast feed one time and my niece didn't care for it I guess. She immediately went to a bottle. Can I do something to prevent this or make them "dry up" (so to speak) when the time comes? I know lactating is natural and can't be stopped, and I do plan on breast feeding. I just don't want to produce milk forever.

Re: STILL Lactating After 3 years?!?!

I did for over 5, BUT she must get that checked out, it can be caused by a tumor on her pitilitary gland that is located at the base of the brain. All she needs to do is get some blood work done after they make sure it is milk that is expressed from her and not anything else. I got mine checked every 6 months or so to make sure, sometimes it is just a freak thing. Hope that helps!
