There isn't really a way to better your chances of getting pregnant with twins. If there are twins in the womens side of your family (ie, your mom, aunts, grandmother,or even great grandmother) then you have a good chance. Good luck!!

actually they have not proven that the "twin" gene is passed from the mother, it could be passed from father to daughter.
anyway, there is no natural way to increase your odds (that i know of). it just happens or it doesnt.
about the only way to attempt getting twins is invetro fertilization....by implaning two fertalized eggs in your uterus.....but that would be VERY costly.
i know how you feel though, i have wanted twins too......my hubby thinks i am crazy...lol maybe i am
strange that it could be passed from fahter to daughter, but the male pattern baldness gene is passed from mother to son....crazy huh.?!
That is very interesting about how twins are passed from the fathers side of the family. There are twins on my moms side of the family and my boyfriends side of the family. it is wierd how the male pattern baldness is passed from the mom side of the family and the twins from the dad's side of the family!!
I have twins. It is NOT passed on by the fathers side...NOT AT ALL. It's only passed on by the mothers side only. It does not skip generations either. My mother did have twin boys and I have twin girls. You may want to talk to a specialist and see if they give fertility drugs to increase your egg increase but then you take the chances of triplets, quads and sometimes you may even have to choose reduction of having to make a decision on aborting on or more of the babies. Why don't you adopt twins? I'm sure there are plenty out there and alot of people don't want to take two babies at one time. It was very hard at first until they turned three and then it was easier. My children are 4,3,3. So even if they are a year apart it's just like having twins and you can even dress them the same. People think mine are triplets.
well i just edited my post, i did some research and found that they dont seem quite sure if it comes from the mothers side or fathers side, just that it hasnt been proven that it only comes from the mothers side.
it doesnt matter that your boyfriend carries the gene. that wont help you have twins, (his genetic makeup will not increase the number of eggs you ovulate in one month)
but if you two would have a girl, she could get the gene from him and possibly have twins.
We are having identical twins. Before we knew they are identical I did a lot of research and talked extensively with my doctors about this. Here's what I've learned.
Identical twins are just random. They happen with equal frequency across all races, with no regard for whether there are other sets of twins in a particular family. Identical twins are NOT hereditary.
Fraternal twins are caused when the woman releases two eggs in one cycle, and both eggs get fertilized. The tendency to release two eggs IS hereditary, and can be passed to the woman either from her father or her mother. It seems odd that a father can pass to a daughter the tendency to release two eggs, but a man can, in fact, pass that tendency to his daughter.
For example: suppose your father was a fraternal twin. That means his mother (your grandmother) had the tendency to release to eggs. Your father can pass that tendency to his daughters, and his daughters (you and your sisters) could be more likely to release two eggs and therefore get pregnant with fraternal twins. It is from this situation that people get the expression that twinning "skips a generation." Obviously, your father can't to anything to make your mother more likely to release two eggs and get pregnant with twins, but he CAN pass that tendency on to you. So, in my example, if your dad was a twin there would be twins at his generation, none at your generation, but then you could have twins.
Your mom----------Dad (a twin)
...................|............|
...................|......(twinning tendency)....
..................You (not a twin, but carries twinning tendency)
.................. |..........................
.......your fraternal twin babies..........
Of course, your mom could just as easily pass the tendency if she were a twin, but that one is pretty obvious. If mom has a tendency to release more than one egg, she can pass that tendency to her daughter.
The point is, either the mother or the father of a woman can pass to that woman the tendency to release two eggs. However, the woman's husband, not matter how many twins are on his side of the family, can never make his wife get pregnant with fraternal twins if she doesn't have the tendency to release two eggs. There is nothing a man can do during conception that can make a woman release more than one egg.

Thanks Lawgirl. That was extremely informative. i am so glad to know that identical twins are just by chance. I guess the odds aren't good for me to have fraternal twins, b/c there are none on my dad's side of the family. Congratulations on having identicle twins yourself.

I am 99% positive it has in fact been proven. Scientist looked at the genes, sperm, and eggs and have in fact concluded that the female is responsible for twins, triplets, etc. It is the male who is responsible for the sex of the child. I have been so interested in this subject for many years and do keep up to date on the facts. I am a scientist at heart.

When I first became pregnant I thought right away I was carrying twins. I grew somewhat fast and just assumed it was twins. I talked to my family doctor and he asked if twins ran in my Mother's family.Well, yes they do,but only identical twins in my Mother's family.(and as mentioned above identical twins is just something that happens, not heredity). My husband's Mother is a twin and her daughter has twin boy's. The male does determine the sex of the baby, but not in making a twin.
becca....while it is true a woman has so many eggs released....wether it be one 2 or 3 ......what i am saying it that a father can pass the "fraternal twin gene" to his daughter and her body will ovulate two eggs at a time instead of one.
and that is for sure......you can get the twin gene from either parent....
It is possible for the male to have a part in creating twins. My greatgrandmother had twin boys, and their spouses have no twin lines in their families and both have had a set of twins. I think it's all up to chance. I don't think you can do anything to increase the chances of having twins other than fertility treatments. GOod luck!

Sometimes it just happens. But there is NO WAY the male partner can make the female partner release two eggs. It's all up to her body. There is absolutely nothing he can do to her body during sex to make her get pregnant with two babies if she didn't release two eggs.

I have no idea if this has any truth to it but i heard somewhere that those who are on the pill have a higher chance of having twins? probably not though.I don't really see how that would work.
I wasn't on the pill when I got pg with my twins. I have a friend who was pregnant with her third set of twins. She lost the first set, had one of the second and one of the third set. The other twin in the womb past away. There is NO one in her family that has had twins.
My mother has fraternal twins and so do I.
Also I just wanted to know where the poster got their information that a male has a part in making twins if it is on HIS side of the family?
i think maybe i am not explaning what i mean very well....
a husband can not have ANY impact whatsoever on how many eggs his wife releases, that is up to the womans body every month, the male will release millions of sperm every time he ejaculates.
now lets say the husbands mother was a twin or had twins, or twins just run in his family, it means that the twin gene is in his family and he can pass it on to his daughter, and then her body could produce twins as a result of multipule ovulation monthly....but if the husband had a son, the son could not have any effect on his wife to have twins, but can pass the gene on through his children.
i hope that was more clear.
for instance on my hubby's side twins run in the family, but that will not in any way help my odds of having twins....however, he may pass the gene to our daughter and she could go on to have twins. now as for our son, he will not have any effect on his partner in having twins, but he may carry the gene and pass it into his children.
Canadiangirl, I had a dream last night that you were pregnant with twins. I don't even know you, so that's wierd. I must have been up too late on the boards or something, I'm not psychic or anything. Just thought it was very odd. Hope you get what you want.
