Lotus Birth

Has anyone tried this? I heard about it somewhere on the web and it sounded interesting...just wondering if anyone else had heard of it or had tried it. From what I undersatnd, it's basically not cutting the umbilical cord and keeping the placenta with the child until the cord dries up and falls off naturally (about 5 days?). Sounds a bit gross, but from all the pictures I've seen & what I've read, the placenta is heavily salted and wrapped up and kept in a bag, so it doesn't smell or anything, and the theory is the baby gets the benefits of the vitamin-rich cord blood for a bit longer than if you'd snipped the cord at birth.
