hi, i am 18 weeks and i have been having BH contractions for about a week now, i had these in my first pregnancy and had so many pelvic exams i learned to check myself for dialation, well last night i checked myself and my cervics is open to the size of my middle finger.....i called the pernatal nurse and i am being seen tomorrow at 2:15, tonight i am having some BHC and pressure as well, i checked my cervics again and it is still about a finger tip open, should i go to the ER or keep my appt. tomorrow instead???
laying down isnt working too well, i still feel the pressure and still occasionally have the BHC.
also, i delivered my daughter about 3 weeks early.
Chrissi go to the ER Thats what I would do. You may think your dialated but not really ( I hope) But just in case. Ive been having them some more last night and today as well. I will be thinking of you and checking in here later on to see what youve done and has happened. Let me know. Good luck.
Go immediately to the ER. It is not normal to have Braxton Hicks this early in a pregnancy and they are never regular. After you get to the ER tell the nurse your are 18 weeks pg and possibly in labor. The ER staff will call you doctor and they may send you to Labor and Delivery to be monitored. Ask them to check you for a urinary tract infection as that is one problem that can cause labor to start and is easily treated.
Do not check yourself again - that may cause more trouble and introduce infection.
Again I say, go to the hospital now. Do not delay.
hi everyone, thanks for your concern....i did wait to go to the hospital today instead of last night, and she told me i may have a bladder infection, and she gave me antibiotics to take for a week.....really glad i went now, this could have been really bad, thanks for all the advice.
but these antibiotics, she said they are safe, i hate taking meds during pregnancy but i guess if i would have a bladder infection, taking them is safer than not taking them.
but i wonder why she said i "may" have one instead of i "do" have one....i asked her if my urine was showing signs and she said yes, but it was hurried and she just wasnt to clear.....but i guess she wouldnt have given my the rx if i didnt really need it.
and barbaraH when i check myself i scrub my hands with hot soapy water then i soak them in rubbing alcohol before doing it... so i am pretty sure i am getting them as clean as possible beforehand.
ohhh and she said my cervics is long and closed....even though there is fingertip dialation.....she seemed happy with it, and the baby's hb is fine as well.....
i just hope this goes away soon and this baby is born when it can be healthy and not to soon....
Please, I am glad you are okay. Thank God. But please, don't stick your fingers in your vagina and try to check your cervix. You could give yourself an infection with dirty fingers or start a problem up there if you try and check yourself. Please don't do this again. If you think there is a problem, please just see the doctor. I beg you.
OK... I've heard this many times about checking your own cervix. I'm not trying to be argumentative, but if you wash your hands before checking your cervix, is it really any dirtier than a penis that's been stuck in sweaty underwear all day???? Or should DH shower before we have sex every time? Plus what about sexual foreplay? Docs never told me not to let DH use his fingers. The docs okay sex through all of pg in most cases, and I know the cervix can definitely be hit. I don't think anyone believes it's okay to stick dirty hands up there, but it's my body and if a doc can wash his hands, don latex gloves, and stick his fingers up there, why can't I? I know what hurts better than he does, so I don't think it's a case of damaging the cervix with too much pressure, because some docs and nurses especially are super rough and brutal while checking the cervix! I'm sure women are much more gentle with themselves.
Anyway, I've seen this posted several times, and I have to wonder.

When the cervix is open, there is always danger of infection entering the uterus. In most pregnancies, the cervix is closed and is a barrier to infection. The soap you have at home is not the germicidal kind that is used to scrup in the hospital. It is simply a bad idea to risk infection when there is NO NEED. If you are worried there is no information here that beats asking your doctor.
If you do not tell your doctor what concerns you, where you hurt, when you hurt, when you have spotting and all the other problems that can happen, your doctor cannot take good care of you and your baby. You may invite big problems by not "bothering" your doctor.
Especially in early pregnancy if you start to dialate, your doctor may decree "no sex" to decrease the chance of the baby coming far too early.
To all of you I'll say do not mistake contractions before 25 weeks as "just Braxton Hicks". BH contractions do NOT start this early. I lost a baby at 20 weeks because I thought the contractions were BH and because I didn't want to bother my doctor at night. I'd like to spare you that heartbreak.
