Ok to take prenatal vitamins WITH a meal??

My directions say to take 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. I have tried this and i feel awful all day long!! I started taking them w/ dinner and it seems to be better. Am I preventing a lot of absorption of the vitamins?? At least I'm taking them right??

I take mine in the morning about 15 minutes after breakfast. If I do not take them with food I will throw them up. There is no way I could take them on a empty of half empty stomache. If you are concerned though I would call your dr's office and talk to a nurse to ask.

I always took mine with food because they can make you nauseous and because I didn't know any differently. But I would check with a pharmacist. If you have to take them as you indicated, I would wait until two hours after you eat and then maybe take them with some saltine crackers or something.

Re: Ok to take prenatal vitamins WITH a meal??

Mine say that too...To take them on an empty stomach. HELLO? Yuck, they would make me sooo sick - and I take the chewable kind. I talked to my doc and he said that 9 times out of 10, the reason the box or directions say that is because for many pregnant women, they wont 'stay down' if you take them with food - which was opposite for me so he told me to go ahead and take them with food, juice, or whatever I had to in order for me not to get sick.
I would call your dr office or pharmacy and ask if you want to know for sure, but hope this helps a bit!

I take mine at bedtime, the only time I can tolerate them since they make me feel sick all day. My doctor says it's fine to take them whenever you can tolerate them.

I also take mine before bed. If I take it during the day than I feel horibble all day.

I had to take them before I went to sleep, the smell alone of them made me sick!

Re: Ok to take prenatal vitamins WITH a meal??

Thanks for all the replies! I called my pharmacist and she said that it's o.k. to take them w/ food. She said she doesn't know many people who can actually take them on an empty stomach. I was concerned about the absorption, if the food would prevent absorption. She said that I would still absorb all of the vitamins.. just at a slower rate. She said on an empty stomach they absorb into your system faster. I'm going to continue taking them w/ dinner..it helps!!
