Unhappy Ultrasound - Couldn't fully see heart or kidneys :(

Hello Ladies,

I just got back from my doctor's appointment this morning. I had an ultrasound on December 22nd and the doctor told me that the radiologists weren't able to get a clear picture of the entire heart or pick up the kidneys for the baby. I was 18 weeks 5 days according to their records. I'm a plus size mommy so I'm wondering if this is something I should be concerned about? I'm being sent to a hospital off island from where I live because they have better equipment but I think I might lose my mind waiting. I asked the doctor if I should be concerned and he said everything else about hte baby looks very healthy. I'm just concerned that maybe the baby is missing some of his or her heart and or perhaps no kidneys? He couldn't give me a positive answer without the proper tests which I understand. Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this.

Concerned

I forgot to add that I do feel the baby moving a lot and we were able to pick up the heartbeat during my appointment. I'm hoping these are all positives to affirm everything is okay.

Just because they couldn't see them fully, doesn't mean they aren't there. If your doctor doesn't seem overly concerned, I would try not to worry too much until after your next ultrasound. I know that's easier said than done. Movement and a heartbeat are definitely positive signs. Let us know how it goes!

Re: Ultrasound - Couldn't fully see heart or kidneys :(

I had the same problem it drove me crazy until I had my next U/S. The U/S place I went to has the radiologist come in and look at the U/S while you are there. It is a specialist place and she told me right then and there that they could'nt see everything and schedualed another one for 2 weeks later. Everything turned out to be fine. I kept thinking my child had no kidneys or the heart was too small. I am also a plus size mommy so maybe that does have something to do with it.

since I know how it feels already to go crazy over this I would tell you to relax, I know its easier said than done.

Good luck. When are they schedualing your next one?

Re: Ultrasound - Couldn't fully see heart or kidneys :(

Thank you so much everyone for your replies!
Siobhan, how far along were you when they did your first ultrasound? I was close to 20 weeks. The doctor's nurse has called Halifax to book my ultrasound. I live in Canada so I have to go off island from where I live to have it done. I'm hoping they'll let me know when my appointment is very soon. She said it wouldn't be too long considering my due date is soon (May 12th).

I'm trying to rest easy but like you said it's hard to do.

I was probably around the same as you, I think 18.5 weeks. I had alot of U/S around 6 or 7 I think. I was relieved everytime I had one. Just to see that babies heartbeat was the most wonderful thing in the world. My baby was really big so thats why I had so many they wanted to keep an eye on the size. I had her a week early thank god, I don't think I would have gone into labor on my own or on time.

I wouldnt worry. At only 18 weeks, it may not always be possible to see EVERYTHING, depending on the machine they are using. Sometimes the machines at the dr office's dont pick up everything as good as the ones the hospitals. I would relax (I know easier said than done). When you go to your next appointment or u/s, I would have whoever is doing it, point out everything to you. I am sure everything will be fine!!

hugs and belly rubs!

Re: Ultrasound - Couldn't fully see heart or kidneys :(

Did the doctor say anything about the baby's amniotic fluid level? If the fluid level was normal, there is probably no problem with the kidneys. If I understand things correctly, the amniotic fluid is made mostly of the baby's urine. They swallow it, pass it as urine, and then restart the cycle. If there is adequate fluid, I think that means that the kidneys are working correctly. Otherwise, the baby would swallow, but then the kidneys would not be able to make urine, so the fluid would be low.

Have a good cry if you need to let your fear all out, but it is so much better for your baby if you can try to stay calm. I hope everything works out well. Good luck!

Re: Ultrasound - Couldn't fully see heart or kidneys :(

Kim,
My baby had no kidneys. They didn't know until 24 weeks when I had my 2nd ultrasound. They could of found out earlier if they would of done an earlier ultrasound. I had no fluid what so ever at that point. So if your fluid is ok everything should be fine. My angel went home to God on
Oct. 6th, 2004.

Re: Ultrasound - Couldn't fully see heart or kidneys :(

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Sharp

I wanted to post a quick update to let everyone know I had my ultrasound yesterday off island and everything went perfect. The specialist was able to see the baby's kidneys and heart and said things were perfect. He said the baby is a little small but still within the normal ranges. I have another ultrasound at 32 weeks to make sure everything is progressing well.

I also found out that I'm having a little boy so I'm very excited. Thanks to everyone who posted. It helps me make it through these last couple of weeks waiting.

Kim
