Well in some salons the people working there do wear face masks to cover them from breathing the fumes. I have never checked into it though. I havent even painted my nails since I became pregnant. Not because of the fumes, but because I feel like I have become lazy(or maybe just tired
The people who work there also wear the masks due to all the particles (nail layers that are filed down and "sanded", acrylic nail powder applied and sanded) constantly flying through the air that aren't so great--since they are exposed to it ALL day, they need to wear them.
The only problem I can see with a pregnant woman going there is the fact that she might be sensitive to the smells and get some NASTY headaches! Other than that, go be pampered!!

packerfan4ever...you are correct about the masks being used for Particles...not vapors. I used to travel throughought IL doing a project for the State of IL Health Dept in nail salons (salons who do acrylics where sanding & grinding occurs). I was testing particulates in the air. Comparing results with and without the use of downdraft tables in nail salons.
Those masks they use provide no protection agains smells, gasses, or vapors...(you would need a series of charcoal filters attached to acomplish that)...they only provide MINIMAL protection against larger particulates.
I'm in agreement that the smell would make me sick, sick, sick (despite the fact I loved the smell of nail salons before getting pregnant).
You could do a test run on yourself and paint your own nails. I just painted my nails and I realized that I made a big mistake. I cannot stand the smell. I now have a headache from it. Now imagine how long you're in a nail salon with those smells. It may be too much.
