can a fetus have a seizure in the womb

My daughter who is 7-1/2 months pregnant said she has had feelings where the baby is moving so weird, like shaking..not like a nomal kick or movement..her sister has Epilepsy, so she is concerned and I don't remember feeling anything like that when I was pregnant. Is it possible a fetus can have a seizure?

Re: can a fetus have a seizure in the womb

my baby moves like that sometimes, but as far as I know it's caused from nerves in the baby moving at random, real jerky movements that don't stop or get worse is sometimes caused my stress in one way are another in the baby. She needs to let her doctor know, as far as seizures? I have no idea.
but if the baby does it on ocassion and the rest of the time the movements could be called normal, then it's probably nothing to worry about.
But there are test that can be done to check the baby for genetic disorders...
hope this helps....

Re: can a fetus have a seizure in the womb

I was wonderng the same thing. A couple times last week I got these weird shaking movements while I was just relaxing in the recliner. I mentioned to my mom that it felt like the baby was having seizures. No one in my family has any kind of seizure disorder. I will be mentioning this to my md next week when I go for an appointment.

I've been getting that too with this pregnancy and have wondered the same thing. She always seems fine in all my exams or NST's, but I don't remember feeling it with my first.

Nice post. I asked my doc this last appt because I get it too. It scared me so bad. He said he hears it a lot. She just gets these little bursts of energy and goes bonkers!

Re: can a fetus have a seizure in the womb

I had wondered about this too! Btu the good thing is, even if they baby were having seizures, he couldnt hurt himself. I'm sure you know that the danger of seizures comes mostly from falling, and the lack of oxygen. Well obvioulsy they can't fall, and they dont' use their lungs to breathe, so they would still be getting the oxygen they need!
It sounds like a pretty normal thing though!

Re: can a fetus have a seizure in the womb

Thanks Spanish! I called my doc just to make sure...she said that there's a really rare condition wherein the mother's body doesn't absorb any folic acid or other vitamins - ever - and this can cause the baby to have seizures in utero, but otherwise it's normal. She said she wasn't sure what causes it, but not to worry (since I know I don't have the nutrient deficiency thing).

I was also told by my pharmacist that some medication can cause seizures in the fetus during the third trimester. I didn't get into furthe detail with her, but will be asking my doctor.
