I counted contractions for 5 hours, and they never got closer together than 6-8 minutes. I kept calling L&D because they were getting painful, and they kept telling me to wait til they were 3-4. They never got closer together, but they did get more painful, so I said "screw them!" and went to the hospital. Thank goodness, cause when I got there I was a good 5 cms. My contractions never got closer together til they gave me pitocin, and I kept dilating!
My bottom line is trust your body and your intuition. The rules don't apply to everyone, and you don't want to be doing a car delivery.
Everyone says "you'll know when you're in labor" and I HATED that. But it's true. The feeling is unmistakeable.
If you do make a false start to the hospital, it's better to be safe than sorry! Lots of people have done it.
