Mommies that Breastfeed

Hey ladies. I saw a question on another post that I was also wondering about.
Some people say that your breast milk comes 1-4 days AFTER the baby is born. My question is if you want to breastfeed as soon as your baby is born (like they show some mothers doing right after the baby is born on those baby shows) how can you do it if you have no actual breastmilk? Are you feeding them the colustrum (sp) that is present before birth?

Yes. I think thats why most babies lose some birth weight after being born but it's the best for them to have the colastrum. After that you drown them with your breat milk so enjoy the first couple of days....

Okay, I need more details too...

So, this colostrum stuff...is it always there & ready for the baby when it's born?

Am I correct in assuming that colostrum does not leak out like milk does?

For people who leak before the baby is born, does that mean their colostrum is gone? If so, where did it go??

I feel I must apologize for my questions...I'm 36 years old, college educated, consider myself pretty smart...but am CLUELESS about this breast feeding thing.

When you leak before the baby is born you are leaking colostrum and you will not leak it away. Your breast will produce colostrum no matter what for a few days after the baby is born and then the milk will come in. And yes the colostrum is always there and ready for the baby when its born.

I nuresed two healthy boys never had a problom with the weight lose .Yes the colostrum is always there and ready .when your milk does come in it about 3 days the colostrum is still there it what the baby gets befor the milk .that's why they say you don't have to give your baby water .that's what the colostrum gives the baby and the babys viteamens.

Re: Mommies that Breastfeed

Actually, you MAY not have to worry...my milk was already in the 2nd day after my son was born. And really the reason why babies lose some weight is because they've been swimming for 9 months and they're a little "water-logged"...they lose water weight.
