Reason: New Info
As far as I know this is seriously bad news at that stage of pregnancy. I think it's called an incompetent cervix, when basically the cervix isn't strong enough to hold itself closed as the weight of the baby increases. I think it's really good news that this has been spotted now because usually the first time a women knows she has this problem is when she miscarries in the 4 - 5th month. In this situation the doctors will sew the cervix shut so that it can't come open before the baby is ready to be born. Hopefully things should work out for your friend as the doctors have spotted the problem and can treat it.
are there ways you can tell if you have an open cervix? How does the doc spot it? The only time I have ever had a physical exam is my very first appt. So far everytime i go in its just Heart beat check sugar and protein and one U/S. I am 22 wks. Just wondering if you feel something different of what. thanks

Sorry I don't know the answers to either of these questions. What I posted was just what I'd read in one of my books. Unfortunately I think you don't know whether you have a weak cervix unless you've had a previous problem and then in a subsequent pregnancy they sew it closed. I don't know at what stage they can sew it closed, perhaps they do have to do it early on and that's why this lady is on bed rest instead. I'm sorry I didn't mean to worry anyone - I know we have enough things to worry about anyway and remember it is very, very rare.
I think they can do it at this stage. Soemone we know lost twins recently due to a problem like that, and they were gonna sew her shut, she was 20 weeks, but it was too late, but they have caught yours early so if they can do it it will have abetter chance of helping.
I hope all goes well.
I received a cerclage to close up my opening cervix at 20 weeks and 3 days. There is a chance of rupturing the waters at that point, but I would have lost my baby if I had not recieved it. My next pregnancy, I will have to have one earlier like 13 weeks. Your friend should see a perinatologist to be sure. i wish her good luck
