Question Pre-Pregnancy Genetic Tests?

I am not pregnant yet, but I was wondering what tests are available to have done on both me and the father before we do get pregnant to see if either of us carries a gene that could cause any kind of health problem in the baby at any time in his life. I know that you can't take a test for everything, but does anyone know what is available? Thanks!

Re: Pre-Pregnancy Genetic Tests?

I know a friend of mine had some tests done cause her sister was born w/ problems and she was checked to see if she carried the gene and she did. I think they are Genetic Counselors, ask your OB to refer you. Is there any reason you think this could be a problem? Cause I would think it could be quite expensive and if it isn't necessary you may want to not have it done. Goodluck to you and baby dust too!

They can test if you are a carrier of cystic fibrosis. You both have to be carriers for the baby to have a chance of getting it.

Re: Pre-Pregnancy Genetic Tests?

It is important to talk to a Genetic counselor if you know of any health concerns on either side of the family. If you don't know of any any major health issues then you wouldn't need to go through this process. Most likely you would need to be referred unless you are willing to pay out of pocket. Regardless, I'm sure that it is costly.

Is their something specific you are concerned about?
