Accuracy of early ultrasound

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone can tell me how accurate an early ultrasound is for dating a pregnancy. I took a home pregnancy test on May 4th and it came back positive - so that would make me 4 weeks then and around 9 weeks now. I just had an ultrasound to better date the pregnancy and the technician said i was 6 weeks. Can the ultrasound tech be making an error? otherwise i'm scared that my baby has stopped growing at 6 weeks and i'm carrying a fetus that will not survive.

If anyone has any info please reply.

Thanks, Kathy

Re: Accuracy of early ultrasound

My due date by my period and P/T is june 25 when I had my U/S the tech said july 5. My doc stuck with the june one because he said it's common for them to be a week or so off.A 3 week difference they may recheck. good luck I hope everything is ok.

Did they find a heartbeat? I would think as long as there is a normal heartbeat everything is fine.

Re: Accuracy of early ultrasound

My doctor explained to me that the earlier the sonogram for dating, the more accurate it is. My doctor also told me after 9 weeks, the accuracy starts going downhill.

I had no clue how far along I was when I found out I was preganant (no menstrual cycle present due to depo shot). Doctor used a combination of bloodwork (for hormone levels) and sonogram measurements to determine I was 7 weeks at the time. He also explained that his calculations on my EDD are far more accurate than any menstrual cycle info I could have provided because it's based on medical data and not guestimates.
Good luck! Gayle

Re: Accuracy of early ultrasound

I would wait and have the dr. do another US. Early in mine the heartbeat couldn't even be detected until my US showed the embryo at around 7 weeks. The most my due date has differed from that given by date of last period, was 6 days. But my OB decided to use it based on LMP rather than the US. HTH.
