Diabetes Test

I am going for the gestational diabetes test in a few hours. What exactly does that entail. All i heard is how they make you drink this awful stuff. How long is the test?

Re: Diabetes Test

They have you drink a soda tht is high in sugar (could be orange, cola or lemon-lime), they have you wait I THINK an hour, then they draw your blood to see how your blood sugar is. Thats it!!

Re: Diabetes Test

In Canada we only have the orange one, (at least that's what I was told) but it isn't all that bad, it tastes like a sweet orange pop. I wouls have prefered a cola one though.
The 1st glucose test isn't too bad, but if you fail that you have to go for a more extensive one, in Canada it's a 2 hour test and in the States I think they do a 3 hour test. You have to fast for 12 hours before that one and they test your blood before the drink then at 1 hour and 2 hours after the test, it wasn't so bad except my butt was sore from sitting in those uncomfortable office chairs for so long...and they had to do all 3 needles in the same arm, I apparently have better veins on that side. Luckily I passed the second one...but it is all worth it in the end. Goodluck!

Re: Diabetes Test

I had my glucose test last Friday. It wasn't bad at all. The drink was actually pretty good. I liked it. Then I had to sit around and read baby magazines for an hour (that's all they had at the OBs office ) and then get one vial of blood drawn. On Monday I called and got the results that everything was okay.

If the it comes back high then you have a second test done that requires fasting for a few hours prior. I think the post above mine really gets into more detail about that.

Re: Diabetes Test

We are lucky the first test w/ my son they gave me the drink and told me to drink it 45 mins before coming and then they drew blood and I left. But I did have to have the second test, but passed it. Goodluck to you.
