I tested positive for strep B before I delivered my baby and they administered antibiotics to me for the entire time I was in the hospital of my 36 hour labour while I was in the hospital.I ended up with a C section and was given 24 hrs of antibiotics via a drip after my daughter was delivered. My question is as dumb as this sounds. Will I need antibiotics again if I have a second child because I will continue to have strep B? My doctor did not explain anything to me about this except that strep B was a risk to my baby during delivery. Thanks.
I wondered the same thing as I was positive with ds 2.5 years ago and assume I will be again. What I've been told is that your odds increase if you were +'ve before but the bacteria can leave your system as well.
Well I had alot of Bladder infections a few years back and during them testing my urine at the time I was told I had Strep B and of course that it wasn't a problem, very common. And would only need Antibotics during labor to help the baby from getting sick. Well it had been YEARS and when I finally did get pregnant I told them at the beginning of the pregnancy and they said just cause I tested postive before didn't mean I still had it. And that they would test me later in my pregnancy. Well when they tested me I was still positive for Strep B. I ended up having a scheduled C section and also told that the antibotics where only needed for vaginal birth. I haven't been tested yet, I am 28 wks. I think they tested me at 34 or 36 wks last time. But I am having another scheduled C section, and if they test me I fully expect to test positive again.

Before hand, cause they need to know whether to give you the antibotics when labor starts. I can't remember if I was checked at 34 or 36 wks last time, each Dr. may test at different times, you can check with your Dr.

I thought the antibiotics after a c section was odd as well. I know they told my husband that I lost a lot of blood. I was pretty doped up on the epidural and some anti nasuea drug they gave via I.V. an hour before so I was out of it.My c section wasn't planned. My Ob/GYn was at the hospital handling my delivery and when he left for the day the new doctor told me my baby was still high up in the birth canal and her head hadn't turned right and I failed to progress past 9cms . 30 mins after my doc left they had me in the OR doing a c section. I know my OB was not happy the next day when he came back to check on me. Maybe with 2 doctors somehow I was given antibiotics in the confusion. Thanks for you info on strep b. I found out at 39 weeks ( was tested at 37 weeks) I only knew 4 days prior to delivery and I was walking around thinking I was some infectious thing. Got to love doctors.
