Ok, here's the low-down. I'm 10 weeks pg and went in to the ER last week with really bad cramps in my lower-left abdominal area. The ER doc couldn't definitely diagnose it because I do have some fibroids. But the ER doc said that the radiologist thought this problem could possibly be due to a cyst in the area of my left ovary. Whatever it is, it gave me some major cramps for about 4 days.
Now, today, I went to the see my ob, and she says I have to come back in 3 weeks for yet another u/s, because if this is indeed a cyst, I will need to go see the high-risk ob and have surgery to remove this cyst:-( There is still the possibility that this could be a fibroid, but I doubt it, only because when she pointed out the other areas where I have the fibroids, they don't feel anything like that pain in that other area.
I have a tendency of getting shocked at the doc's and forget to ask pertinent questions, but has anyone ever heard of such a thing????? It just seems too strange to me to be cut open and have surgery in an area where I have a young fetus growing. How could it survive that?
Anyone with ANY info would be appreciated. Thanks for letting me vent.
I have never heard of this for an ovarian cyst. They are fairly common and I would get a second opinion. I have had problems in the past from these and the treatment was IV antibiotics because a cyst is like a little sore/infection on your ovary. Unless there is something they didn't tell you I can't understand why they would need to do a surgery for this. Also. fibroids are very common. i have one at the top of my uterus and it is getting bigger the further along that i am but unless they are harming the baby in any way, they leave them alone. the surgery to remove these can be pretty serious.
Don't be afraid to get a second opinion. The hospital I went to tried to take me into surgery to have my appedix removed. When i went to another Doctor in another hospital they found cysts. Also, 2 years later i has laproscopy done and it was determined that my appendix is completely healthy.

The ob told me that it all has to do with the size of the cyst. If it gets bigger than 6 cm, it's a problem. Mines is 9 cm.
My friend is now 14 weeks pg, at 12 weeks she had a scan due to cramping and they found a cyst which was grapefruit sized and they booked her in for an op at 13 weeks, She had a half Hysterectomy (thats how she worded it) where they took the tube, ovary and cyst away and she is feeling 100% better, baby is well and progreaaing.
They had so many different bits of equipment on her throughout the op and the gyn said if she did not have it done she could cause abnormalities to the baby possibly disabling it, she will however likely have to have a C section as the muscles will not have healed well enough for her to give birth naturally.
Just wanted to let you know that bit of info and that she is doing well. Good luck

Thank you so much for that info Sammie. I'm glad that your friend is doing ok.
The size of a grapefruit?? That is unbelievable! I know how big mine is and the amount of pain I get so I can only imagine what she went through.
Is this her first pg? Did they say if she wanted to have anymore kids, that she could with the other half of her reproductive system? That part wouldnt bother me, even though this is my first pg. My mom had "half" a hysterectomy also when she was 13, due to a grapefruit size tumor. Docs told her she probably wouldn't ever get pg. Well, she has 4 kids and had 2 m/c. Go figure.
How is the recooperation after her surgery?? Was it done as outpatient? How long will she be off her feet?
Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
