My little sister is 9.5 weeks along and had her first ultrasound today. She said that they could not find the heartbeat. He said the sac was there but he never could point out the baby or the heartbeat. She said he told her out of the blue that if she had any bleeding or cramps to get to the dr right away? He also told her to come back in in 3 weeks for another u-sound. She just called me and I don't know what to tell her. With my pregnancy this time we had our first u-sound at 7 wks, 5 days and you could see the baby, yolk sac and the heartbeat. I'm scared to death for her but I don't know what to say. Is this a possible miscarriage or what? If it is why didn't the dr tell her that? If you know anything please respond. Thanks.

Re: Can't find heartbeat on ultrasound at 9.5 weeks.
hi
r u sure that ur sister is 9 weeks pregnant maybe she's less, that's why u couldn't c anything in the sac . i think u should wait if there's no bleeding and pain it's ok 2 wait a little longer maybe her dates r wrong . my 1st u/s was at what i thaught 9 weeks but the doc said it was only six weeks and my dates weren't correct ...
i sure hope that's the case with u .just give it sometime and i hope ur sis will be just fine ...
i'll pray for u !!!
Re: Can't find heartbeat on ultrasound at 9.5 weeks.
that's what I thought at first. Maybe the dates are wrong but they are not. The least she could be would be 8 weeks and the baby would still be big enough to see the heartbeat. They actually thought there was more of a chance of her being further along rather than behind on her dates at her first appointment. I'm worried to death about her. It's her first baby and she just turned 19. I'm just praying that her and the baby are ok.

The same thing happened to me, and within a week I started bleeding and had a m/c. If she isn't having pain or bleeding, her dating might be a little off.
Re: Can't find heartbeat on ultrasound at 9.5 weeks.
I am new to the healthboards but I have done a lot of reading and research and I am going to say it like it is. A fetal heartbeat and embryo should definitely be visible by u/s by the 8-9th week. With my DS and my current pregnancy we found a h/b by 6 wks gestation on u/s. I always feel sick to my stomach when I hear about things like this happening. I hope everything is okay but it actually doesn't sound like it is a viable pregnancy. Her Dr should have been more direct with her and told her the truth up front. All you can do is prepare her for the worst while hoping for the best.
Re: Can't find heartbeat on ultrasound at 9.5 weeks.
Whether you actually hear the heartbeat at 9 or 10 weeks depends partly on luck. The instrument must be placed at just the right angle. It also depends on the position of your uterus, and if you're slim or heavy. By the 12th week, the heartbeat can usually be heard consistently, using the Doppler.
Re: Can't find heartbeat on ultrasound at 9.5 weeks.
If they were trying to listen to the heartbeat, I would say don't worry. On an u/s the heartbeat should be visible around 7wks. I had an u/s at 6wk6d and there was a very visible heartbeat. On my 9wk u/s the baby had arms and legs and was very easy to find. Hopefully somehow her dates are off. I really hope that everything turns out to be ok.

Mommie-2-B;
Yes, you are correct about hearing the heartbeat with a doppler. I am currently 14wks, 5 ds pregnant and with this baby we couldn't hear it even at 13 weeks. I was sent to U/S and everything is fine! Baby was sucking it's thumb and the h/b was 163 a min. However, in this case they are referring to an u/s to see the h/b. With u/s a heartbeat is visible as early as 5 and 1/2 weeks to about 6 and 1/2 weeks. So by 9 1/2 weeks there should definately be a sign of a fetal h/b and fetal movement.

Oh I completely misread that. You are exactly right. I'm so sorry for the mis-information.
Re: Can't find heartbeat on ultrasound at 9.5 weeks.
unless her dates are wrong, it doesn't sound good. but it is possible to simply miss the heartbeat or fetal pole even at 9wks. by 11wks, however, it's not likely. good luck.
