I wish I could post copies of my ultrasound pics, but alas, I'll have to explain it instead.
I had my 20 week ultrasound yesterday, and the more I look at the pictures, the more something just looks off. The back of her head looks pointy!! Also, her face doesn't look porportionate.
I really hope I'm justing being paranoid. I'm just wondering what birth defects/abnormalities can be detected on an ultrasound? The tech (also a friend of the family) said everything looked good, but I guess I'll have to wait for the report to go to my doctor to hear the final word. I have NO idea how to read those things, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at, but compared to friends ultrasounds it just looks... off.
Don't worry yourself. And please, don't try to read those pictures! They are so hard to point out one body part from the next. I just had an ultrasound and if I went by what my picture looks like of the baby, I'd say my baby is skinny and kinda resembles that of a racoon. Now, I am sure I am not giving birth to a racoon, but that sure is what his head looks like.
I'm 38 weeks and when I looked at the baby on the actual machine while she was doing the ultrasound he was beautiful. For some reason these techs like to give you the worst pic possible. Or maybe that is just how they turn up on paper.
Good luck and I am sure, being the tech is a friend, she would say if there was something to worry about.
U/S pics are weird!! For my ds his pictures made him look like he had the biggest nose ever! That seemed nearly impossible since my husband and I have tiny little button noses. When he was born of course there it was...a tiny little button nose!! I look at it still and think to myself, "this doesn't even look like him?!". If the tech said everything looked fine I wouldn't worry about it. Things can get in the way and distort u/s pics.
I had an u/s at 13.1 weeks with the baby I am now carrying and I have an awesome pic of it sucking it's thumb!! Sooooo cute. I have it up on our fridge and look at it everytime I'm in the kitchen!
I agree, you souldn't worry about it, if there were any concerns a dr. would spoke to you right after your u/s. When I showed to my DH the pics of the baby I am carrying now he said it looks like a monster (you know the picture of the face where you can see the eyes like black gaps and so on), but when he saw the profile picture of the baby when she was sucking her thumb my hubby melted .Some pics are good, some bad. It the tech said it all looks normal and good that is how it is , just enjoy your pregnancy or what is left from it and DON'T WORRY.

Our ultrasounds aren't done in a doctors office. They're in indipendant clinics and it can take up to 4 days for the doctor to get the report. I'm sure if there was something alarming the doctor would be notified sooner though. I think I'm going to call later this afternoon and see if they heard anything.
It's not so much about vanity. I could care less if she has a big nose and a pointy head as long as she's healthy, but I'm thinking more along the lines of birth defects or genetic problems. I didn't have the triple marker or amnio, and now I'm kinda kicking myself. I've been seen by a specialist because I have blood problems, so he did the "best odds" genetic conseling and with my husband and I both being young, and neither of us have anything genetic in our families, so we decided to not go for the tests.
I wasn't implying that my child having a big nose would have been a problem North, I was just saying the u/s pics can distort what the baby really looks like.
If you had the test done and it came back positive would you have ended the pregnancy? Most women answer no to that question so what difference would it have made to you now if there was something abnormal about the fetus? IMHO there is no way to mentally prepare for something like that anyway.
By the way, I have seen some pretty strange u/s pics of other people's babies and noticed they look "oddly shaped" and when the babies were born they were beautiful and perfect. Try not to stress so much. Like the other poster's have said, the tech would have given you a heads up if she is a friend of the family don't you think?
I just had my ultrasound today and the guy doing it was awesome. He showed me things and why they looked alittle strange. Especially the head because actually the babys head has some spots where its supose to be mishapened and it doesnt show in us because our skin and hair kinda cover it up and as it gets older it wont be so noticable. I never really understood but basically was telling me things look alittle off but its all good. We naturally have bumps and besides these ultrasound pics are just not the perfect thing to see exactly what they look like. If you want that do a 3d which we are actually going to do for the fun of it. Its amazing though what you can see in them. I cried today Ill tell ya that.

Oh I know!! I was telling a friend and she gasped at me because I was concerned about vanity! That's not at all what I meant. I was worried because downs syndrom (from what I've read) can be diagnosed in utero through measurements of the skull.
Our tech said everything was fine, so I'm going with that. You're right. I wouldn't do anything anyway, so there is no point in stressing.

Actually, it's the back of the neck (the nuchal fold) that is a possible marker for downs syndrome. If it measures more than 3mm than they mention it as a heads up and usually send you for an amnio. My sons nuchal is measuring high but husband and I refused the amnio. Don't worry about your pictures, most u/s pictures have something funny about them, and alot of times you get outlines of your uterus and placenta in the picture. I have a picture where it looks like my sons arm is severely deformed, and it's just because you can see a little bit of the placenta in the background. Don't worry ok? You just got a funny picture
north_of_60 - you know -soon2bmommy- is right, if the tech is a family friend she would said something if there was a concern. Also I had my u/s 3 weeks ago @ a clinic and they kept me there for an hour and sent me to pee few times just a little bit so they can measure properly the baby and the placenta, uterus, cervix. They kept doing that until they could measure corectly and after the u/s a doc. came and told me that I have marginal placenta praevia and this was at a clinic. then at my regular doc. app. we spoke about the problem and my options. Anyway ,I wanted to say that you should not worry, if they can see the placenta is 2 cm close to the cervix opening belive me that they are definitly able to measure if there were any abnormalities of the fetus. Please do not worry because when you stress your body sends the negative energy to your baby. Best thing to do is to calm down, think positive, do something that relaxes you, have a cup of tea . . .whatever makes you happy take care
Thanx, I called the doctors office and she kinda chuckled at me. She told me they'd call if there was a problem. She they usually send you straight back to the office with report, and obviously that didn't happen.
I also talked to my good friend last night (the tech's daughter) and she laughed at me too. She said "you know my mom!! she would have said something!".
I feel silly, and the more I look at them, the pictures really do look alien like. LOL
When I talked to my mom she basically told me welcome to parenthood. I guess the worrying starts now and never stops. LOL.
Im So Excited I Go Get My A/s Done On The 16th...from What They Gathered...im About 14 Weeks Preg. And This Is My First A/s.....from What I Read They Are The Size Of Our Big Toe.....my Dh Calls The Baby A Little Turd....haha....
North of 60, My son's first u/s picture (almost 6 yrs ago now) he looked exactly like Bart Simpson with his spiky head. But when he was born he was adorable and with no resemblance to Bart!
