Hi, Im 21 weeks pregnant and when I had my routine ultrasound at 20 weeks the baby was found to have a single umbilical artery and hence I was asked to get a level 2 ultrasound done. I just got done with that yesterday and I was told by the doctor that all else looked good but the femur was a little shorter than usual.I was immediately asked to get an AFP screening test done which I did but the results will take about 10 days .I really dont think I can last that long as I am worried sick. I am 26 years old with no such history in the family and my husband isnt a very tall man. I was wondering if anyone out there had similar experiences....and how it turned out. Also how acurate are the results of the AFP screening done at the 21st week? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks .

All I can say is that my friend's first baby had a single umbilical artery and they watched her pregnancy very closely. After he was born there were no complications. He is completely healthy and very advanced in terms of talking, etc. So a single artery is not always bad. Try to keep your mind off the "what ifs" as they can drive you crazy. I had a bad triple screen which predicted that my baby had Trisomy 18. I was not able to get in for my level 2 ultrasound/amnio for 2 weeks!!! I drove myself crazy and concocted all sorts of things like convincing myself the baby had already died in utero. When we finally got in for the ultrasound, everything looked good but I needed confirmation from the amnio which also confirmed the good results. Good luck to you. Hang in there. Keep us updated.
