contractions w/o baby dropping?

I was just wondering if it is possible to go into labor when the baby hasn't dropped yet. I'm only 36 weeks and when I was hooked up to the monitor today they said I was having "itty-bitty" contractions which I couldn't even feel. I guess I was mistaking them for mild cramps because they didn't really hurt that bad, they were just uncomfortable. I've been having them again this evening and even though they're not regular or really painful I was just wondering the liklihood of going into labor since the baby hasn't dropped yet...or is it possible she has dropped and I don't know it? I would think my doctor would have told me that today though...thanks for any advice
