Acidophilus and pregnancy

Is it okay to take acidophilus in early pregnancy? I am prone to yeast infections, and I have much more discharge than normal. I asked my doctor, and he said that because acidophilus is a food supplement it hasn't been tested with pregnancy so he couldn't give me any advice. Does anyone know anything else?

I don't see how it could be bad. Just make sure you are buying a good brand. All it is is good bacteria for your intestines to aid in digestion and keep the bad bacteria in check. If you are worried about it, just eat a cup of non-heat treated yogurt everyday. Sometimes that is better because depending on the brand, a lot of the acidophilus is already dead by the time you take it...even if it is refrigerated.

Re: Acidophilus and pregnancy

Any kind of yogurt that you buy from a natural health food store should be good. The kind from the grocery store like breyers and yoplait aren't bad, but from a health standpoint, they have too many artificial additives. SunnyFarms is a great brand. Also, about taking acidophilus while pregnant, I would make sure not to buy a cheap brand. With supplements, you pretty much get what you pay for. If it is cheaper in price then chances are there are more "fillers" in it than actual vitamins. Metagenics is a great brand. Their product is called "Ultra Flora Plus". They don't sell their vitamins if the their raw materials don't meet certain standards. Just remember to keep them refrigerated! Good luck!
