Hi girls, I'm new to this thread, will be expecting my first on 11/13. I have read on this site and others about ultrasounds being done at 8 week appointments. I am just wondering if this is customary, as I have spoken to my OB and he informed me they don't do U/S until around week 20. Does it just depend on your Dr. whether or not they U/S early? I'm kind of jealous that so many ladies get to have one so early!! Good luck to you all, I wish you a happy and healthy 9 months.
Congratulations! I think it does just depend on the doctor. My OB/GYN wanted me to have my first one at 6 weeks just to see if it was a "viable" pregnancy. I think that must be routine for her because there was nothing making our pregnancy high-risk and we had conceived on our own. And we were able to find out very early on that we're expecting twins.
I had my ultrasounds 8 and 10 weeks because I was seeing an infertility specialist and they wanted to make sure everything was ok. I then had the usual one at 20 weeks. Depends on the doctor, I guess.
Usually you only get one around 20 wks but with this pregnancy (my second) I've already had 5.
6 wks - lower abdominal pain, wanted to rule out ectopic
10 wks - sudden loss of pregnancy symptoms, checking to make sure baby was okay
13 wks - Couldn't pick up h/b with doppler
18.4 wks - Regular anatomical and gender u/s - IT'S A BOY!
35.1 wks - Growth u/s and confirm gender - IT'S STILL A BOY!
With my first I had one at 19.5 wks and that was it!
Every situation is different and every Doc/Midwife is as well. Hang in there! You'll get to see your little one soon enough!
I think drs will only do u/s's early if they feel there is a medical reason to rule something out. I know I have had I want to say 6 this pregnancy. Granted it is my first and I've had some medical issues, but they mainly do them only before the 20wks if they cant find a heartbeat or what not. That was why I had my first u/s done because we were unable to find ds's heartbeat. But I know otherwise the dr's here wont do an u/s until 20wks, unless they feel there is a medical reason to do one before.
When I scheduled my first appointment I asked what they did, and the scheduler told me that they do an u/s, order blood tests, and do a pelvic exam/pap smear. My first appointment will be at 7wks+3d.
