Re: My first OB appt next Tuesday..vitamin suggestions?
Let me get this straight. You won't get the prenatal vitamins until your 1st visit but in the mean time you want to take vitamins? I guess for over the counter ones it sounds crazy but flinstones. I had a friend who couldn't handle her prenatal vitamins and they told her flinstones were the next best thing. Otherwise make sure the vitamin you get has calcium and folic acid.
Re: My first OB appt next Tuesday..vitamin suggestions?
I'm currently in my 28th week and I'm still taking Flintstones Vitamins Complete. I tried all the others that were prenatal over the counter and the ones prescribed by the doctor and they ALL made me horribly sick. Therefore, my physician said I could take 2 flintstones vitamins a day. Infact, she just had her baby several months ago and that's what she took and it worked out well for her. Also another option would be to go to a Whole Foods Market or natural food store and purchase children's chewable vitamins and for sure you know their products will not contain artificial dyes, preservatives and artificial sweetners.
Re: My first OB appt next Tuesday..vitamin suggestions?
I am not sure why you would have to wait until you see your OB to take them but I am guessing that things are different in the US then here in Canada. Here you would rarely get a prescription for vitamins, you just buy the prenatal vitamins from the drug store...or Walmart in my case...half the price but the same ingredients. Here you would also never wait until you saw your OB to take prenatals as we don't usually see them till we are 28-32 weeks.
Just look for something with atleast .4 mg of folic acid, 250 mg calcium, 27 mg iron (or equivalent) and a vitamin B complex of some description (I am not sure what B components are essential but a deficiency in vit B can cause brain abnormalities).

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I noticed on one of your other posts that you mentioned you wish you were the same boxgirl that you were last August. Do you still feel that way? Good Luck at your apt.
Love,

Re: My first OB appt next Tuesday..vitamin suggestions?
I think Jordyn had good advice for what to look for in a vitamin. I just did OTC prenatals with a folic acid boost with my first PG but with this one the doctor prescribed a fancy prescription prenatal " Primacare" and also I tried "Natale". They are both good--but expensive. although I think this is one place where I would splurge knowing it has all the right things for your baby including Omega 3s! Unless you are really nauseous I would steer away from the Flintstones. They don't have all the extra things that pregnant women need--they're low dosage and meant for kids.
Re: My first OB appt next Tuesday..vitamin suggestions?
Since I was going to a fertility specialist prior to getting pregnant, they wanted me on prenatals right away. Take one you can afford, that have at least 400 mg of folic acid (mine has 800), and the calcium and iron we need. On my first visit to the OB I got a welcome to motherhood package that had the fancy prenatals in it. One had the extra Omega 3's (good for building baby's memory during the 2nd trimester) and the other had stool softners (good for first and third trimesters). I used the ones with the Omega 3's. But was glad there were a freebie. Boy those things are expensive!
I'm just using one from my local market. It has everything I should be taking and it doesn't make me nauseus. If you have morning sickness you may have to find one that doesn't make you sick. But the Flintstones aren't going to have the necessary extras you need while pregnant (although they work with those with m/s problems because they are small and taste good). Also, some vitamins are too abundant in some vitamins/minerals for pregnant women. I would probably take a bottle of prenatals and compare them with a One A Day. You'll see the difference.
