Antibiotics and pregnancy

My OB wants to treat my Trichomonas with an antibio (it's called Metronizadole or Flagyl). I am very nervous about taking anything while pg, especially an antibio. The OB said everything would be fine, and that it wouldn't hurt the baby. I also found out that if I don't treat the infxn, that it could cause preterm labor, or low birth weight. I am 13 wks, so a little past my 1st trimester. What should I do? Anyone else had to take that while pg??

Re: Antibios and pregnancy

I had a bladder infection around 20 weeks. It was causing me to have contractions, so I did take the antibiotic that my OB recommended. (I don't remember what it was.) My husband's cousin had chronic infections during her two pregnancies, and she's sure that they contributed to her early deliveries.

Just remember that your OB is a medical professional and wouldn't give you something that would harm you or your baby. You'll be ok.

Re: Antibios and pregnancy

I had to take that antibiotic a couple of months ago for the same thing. It is ok. I am 35 weeks and 3 days now. Ive had some braxton hicks but that is normal. It is best to take the antibiotic. Dont risk going into labor too early.

Re: Antibios and pregnancy

My OB put me on Keflex when I was about 17 weeks along and everything is fine at 27 weeks now. It's best to treat whatever infection you have - remember you have to take care of yourself to take care of the baby.

take care!

Re: Antibios and pregnancy

Thanks everyone for the input!! I switched OB groups and hospitals today b/c of a bad experience I had a week ago, and just b/c I wasn't comfortable with them. I think if I trusted these OB's that I was seeing, then I would have taken the antbio w/o question. But since I don't feel comfy there, it's hard for me to trust them, for the sake our our little bean. Good luck to all of you, and take good care!!
