Re: ultrasounds?

in the UK we have two main ultrasounds, a dating scan at around 12 weeks and an anomaly scan at around 20 weeks which checks for any possible abnormalities. any further ultrasounds are given at antenatal visits if and when they are needed throughout the pregnancy, often particularly towards the end to check placement of the placenta and the babys weight etc

Re: ultrasounds?

My Dr has a machine right in his office, and gives one every visit. Which for me has been every 2 weeks since 7 weeks.
I think all drs are different and what your insurance will cover matters too.

Re: ultrasounds?

It can depend on where you live - but I am in the US and I get one U/S my entire pregnancy (at week 20) UNLESS there is a problem and more are needed.

Most women I know get the 20 week U/S and that is it - unless, like I said, there are some complications.

Re: ultrasounds?

I had one for dating at 8 weeks and one for anatomy at 19 weeks. I may get one more just to see how big he is and if I want to opt for a c-section... but then again, I might just get two total. We'll see.

Re: ultrasounds?

In my area and on my insurance (Blue Cross) they cover the same as ChasingPrism -- one for dating at 8-10 weeks and then a fetal anatomy scan around 18-22 weeks. I've had to have several additional scans due to a very large fibroid that may be taking up room in the uterus, and my insurance company gets billed for each one of those, but I don't have to pay a copay or deductible at all.

Re: ultrasounds?

I am 28 weeks and I have had 3 going on 4 so far but I have had problems. Most of the other girls I know had one for sure around 20 weeks and that's when you should be able to tell the babies sex.

Re: ultrasounds?

I think it depends on the doc. My friend had 2 one at like 13 weeks and one at 20. My doc has given me and my 3 frinds that go there one every month except one. So basically I've had 4 in 5 months. I asked if I was at high risk or anything, but they said they just do it for everyone. They did one to see if the baby was progressing ok in the begining. They did one the next month to check something about the fluid in the back of the neck along with 2 blood tests to see if they needed to do an amnio. They did another in a month for the same reason and they did a 4th at 21 weeks to check all the organs and to see the sex. THAT one lasted for ever! They looked at all the organs seperately to see that everything was ok.

Re: ultrasounds?

It also depends on whether or not your doctor own a sonogram machine and is trained to use it, or if you have to schedule it outside of the office.
