partial molar pregnacy

Hello,

I am 11 weeks today pregnant. I have had a few ultra sounds and they notice abnormalties in the uterus like the sac or something was to thick. I forget exactly what she said cuz with this being my 2nd time with this really hit me hard. I had a complete molar pregnacy about 5 years ago and it was taken care of and my doctor said i should have no further pregnacy problems in the future. My doctor now for this pregnacy is sending me for a 3rd ultrasound but to a specialist to see if this is in fact a partial molar pregnacy. In the other ultra sounds we saw the baby and the heart beat. I have not spotted what so ever or had any abnormal discharge or body symptoms. My HGC has gone up from from 118,000 to 170,000 which first blood taken at 5 weeks and the 2nd blood taken at 10 weeks. i am not having any morning sickness and showing all normal signs of pregnacy. I did notice at the 8 week ultra sound it look like a hole in the babies head. The ultra sound nurse said that is normal development but i am not so conviced and now worried this might be a deformity due to partial mole pregnacy. My appointment for the speicalist isn't till next Friday but i am worried and don't know waht to think. Any ideas or anyone had simular experiance? Thanks

Re: partial molar pregnacy

I was told at 17 weeks I had a partial molar. They had found a large cystic mass on and around the placenta. We were told that this was definitely a partial mole. 2 days later we say a perinatoligist and had an amnio and u/s done. The results came back from the amnio great. They showed no problems, which was ironic since the doctor was sure that there would be issues since it is VERY RARE to give birth to a healthy full term baby when facing a partial mole. They braced us for all the possible maternal problems, bleeding, pre eclampsia, cancer and so on... I'm now 39 weeks and due any day. The baby is great, yet the mass is still there. They will send it pathology after delivery to see if they can figure out what it is. In an u/s it looks EXACTLY like a molar pregnancy. I wouldn't freak just yet. After this experience, I found that doctor's don't always know the answer to everything! Good luck and I'll be thinking about you!

Re: partial molar pregnacy

I hope all goes well for you. Thanks for that reply. You are so right the doctors really don't know much about this situation. I am just freaking out because my last molar pregnacy my doctor said if i didn't have it removed right away i could die from the cancer. I had all the horrible signs of vomiting all the time, i would faint all the time as well. I never did bleed which they claim that is a common thing. Now this doctor is acting like its no big deal and well take care of it as we go along. I am not seeing this as an exceptiable answer.

Well your relpy is helping put me at ease and i thank you and hope all goes well for the both of us and our young ones.

Re: partial molar pregnacy

I had a partial molar pregnancy about 1 year and a half ago. I don't know what my HCG levels were because my doctor never mentioned them to me. Right before my u/s at 6 weeks, I had some brown discharge that started one evening and was gone the next morning. I had nothing after that and the u/s showed a hb. I found out about the partial mole at my 10 week appt. The doctor could not locate the heartbeat with doppler and then we couldn't find the heartbeat on u/s. Looking back on the whole situation there were some warning signs- brown discharge is common in partial moles, I had high blood pressure from early on which is abnormal for me, and I had no symptoms other than I felt nauseaus in the mornings. My boobs were not sore and I don't recall them ever getting bigger. I don't recall the mild pinches and cramping. I do not know what my HCG levels were but I do know that typically with partial moles the HCG levels may increase rapidly similar to twins and the symptoms like nausea may be worse because a partial mole involves a placenta that is almost like cancerous-it develops more rapidly than it is supposed to- which leads to the higher HCG levels and more noticeable symptoms.

I don't know if the doctor can diagnose a partial molar through an u/s only. My doctor didn't even know that it was a partial mole until after the d&C because the cells of the placenta looked a little off. He had to have it sent to a cancer institute and even they couldn't tell for sure. Finally he told me he sent it to the armed forces ???? and they indicated it was a partial mole. So, I don't know if you'r doctor is correct in thinking it is a partial mole based on an u/s alone. I would think that if you got screening they might be able to tell because a partial mole is when the baby inherits 2 sets of chromosomes from the father and one from the mother. So I would think they could know for certain based on the amnio?

I hope for you that your doctor is just jumping the gun. Take care of yourself and keep the faith!

Re: partial molar pregnacy

Sprout is correct. The u/s is ONLY a guess. They can not determine a definite molar or partial molar pregnancy until the tissue is looked at. I'm surprised that they were so worried about the cancer. From what my doctor's have explained...This cancer is 99% treatable. The 1% applies to those who aren't healthy enough going in to the treatment. I don't know much more about it and hope NOT to find out My thoughts are with you and I hope everything turns out alright! Let us know!!!
