How long does it take to dilate?

I went to the doctor this morning and they said I have already started dilating. How long or short of time could it be til I get to 10? I know people do it at different speeds. Just wondering if I could have this baby sooner than later? Thanks!

Re: How long does it take to dilate?

Some people can be dialated to 1 or 2 for several weeks, and some go straight through to 10. You mentioned in the July moms thread that you've been having contractions as well, which changes the scenario a bit. Are they Braxton-Hicks contractions or labor contractions? I would assume if they were the real deal, they wouldn't let you go home. It's difficult to say how long you'll be dialated, especially with contractions and your history. You may have your baby soon.

Re: How long does it take to dilate?

Im 38w6d today....at 36w I was 2cm dialated and 50% effaced. Last week at my 38w appt I was 3cm dialated and 70% effaced.....and have sat dormant since. With my other 2 I didnt really dialate a whole lot until I actually went into true labor. DS #1 I labored start to finish for 5 1/2 hours and with DS #2 I labored start to finish for 6 hours.....they say after the first one the tendency is to go faster and that with the first it could take several hours. Soooooo I guess it varies depending on each pregnant mom. Sorry I wasnt any help - it does sound like things have started to move along for you tho!!

Good luck!
