Advice needed on 21 week u/s (could only get one kidney)

Hi there,

I hope maybe someone was in the same situation. I am 22 weeks pregnant and had my ultrasound at 21 weeks for the level 2 ultrasound. Everything went okay , however, they did not get a visual on one kidney. It has me really paranoid. Has anyone else had this happen? I go back in 4 weeks for a recheck. I hope everything is okay :-(

We also were told that they were not able to see everything they needed to see when we went in for our 19 weeks ultrasound (I think the baby was sleeping, lol).

So we had a follow-up u/s at 23 weeks and she was very active and they were able to see all the things that they couldn't get a "visual on" before, and that is when they were able to tell us she was a girl! She was born healthy! I think, and this is just a guess, that if they actually thought that your baby was missing a kidney, that they would expediate the the follow-up u/s.

I hope everything continues to go well in your pregnancy!

HI Diana,

What kind of things did they not see at the regular ultrasound? They want me to wait 4 weeks to see how things develop. They tried to get the head of the ultrasound dept to look over my scan when I was in their but they could not find him. I dont' know what to think right now.

This happened to a friend of mine as well. They could not see her daughter's diaphram. She went back a few weeks later and they saw everything they needed to see and she was just fine. She had her little girl in March and she is as healthy as can be. I agree with the other post....if they were truly worried, I don't think they'd make you wait for four whole weeks.

Try not to worry, I am sure your baby is fine!

I haven't had this happen... But just wanted to give you some reassurance if you baby does in fact only have one kidney. My husband was born with one kidney and has been just fine. He hasn't had any problems.. they discovered it when he had a kidney infection when he was five. Hopefully at your next u/s they will get to see the other kidney!! That way you won't have to worry anymore.

Re: Advice needed on 21 week u/s (could only get one kidney)

I honestly don't remember all the things that they couldn't locate. I do remember though that I could tell the u/s tech was trying to mask her concern at the fact that the baby wasn't moving (there was a heartbeat) but baby wasn't responding at all to jiggling, prodding, etc. Finally at the end she gave one good kick and I actually heard the tech breath a sigh of relief. So the whole thing was just so weird and stressful that I wasn't worried about the list of things that couldn't be seen (in addition I had had an ultrasound at approx. 11 weeks and they saw almost everything then). Plus they had me coming back in 4 weeks.

On the other hand, when my friend had her 20 weeks ultrasound they could not locate one of the arteries in the umbilical cord. They were given an appoinment for an in-depth ultrasound at the big medical center in the state (over an hour away) immediately. I think it was like three days after the original. The baby was diagnosed with single umbilical artery.

That's why I am thinking that if they thought your baby might actually be missing a kidney that they would have sent you for a more in-depth ultrasound right away.
