Question how many ultrasounds can you get?

Hi..I was wondering if ultrasounds were completly safe or they limit the number of them. I am four months. I had one back on April 28th at like, 12 weeks I think. My boyfriend is anxious to know what it is. Wondering if it is too soon to get one next week. Personally I dont really need to know yet, I like the wonder..and Im not so fixed on Boy or Girl..I just want Healthy ...10 fingers, 10 toes!

Re: how many ultrasounds can you get?

It depends where you live as to how many are recommended. In the UK they usually give one at 12 and one at 20 weeks, give or take a week if it is a busy time for the department.

I am a high risk pregnancy and so have one every month to check DD is still growing ok, and the research seems to suggest that as long as you don't have really prolonged ultrasounds it should cause no potential risk to you or the baby.

The only ones that my OB warned me about were the 3D/4D ones, she said you should limit those to no more than a 20 minute check at one time because the frequency causes the immediate area to start to heat up a little which would be potentially risky if left too long.

It is exciting seeing your little one on screen isn't it! Hope you are enjoying the pregnancy.

Re: how many ultrasounds can you get?

Well, my friend was adamant his wife was having a boy. He was soooo excited about it, kept talking about football and all that stuff to the bump.

Anyway, when the big day arrived and the baby came out he took one look of shock - she was a girl, and then he just melted. He now says he could not imagine it being any other way and he dotes on his daughter.

I think secretly, or not so secretly in some cases, many people wish for a certain sex but I think once they see their baby they really don't care. Like you said, as long as it is healthy it is all that matters.

I know how you feel, I was under a lot of pressure from the in-laws and hubby that they REALLY wanted a girl. (All boys in their family) My hubby coped by presuming he would not get his way and it would be a boy and that he knew it would be OK once he adjusted. Luckily for him it appears we are having a DD, but maybe if you get your partner to think about how blessed you will both be just to have a baby and explain that if it is a girl you want him to still love her as much as if it were a boy.

Good Luck!

Re: how many ultrasounds can you get?

I am 27 weeks and i have had three and i currently have an order to get another. Everytime i go to my 4 week check ups they give me another order. I've had one at at 12 weeks then another at 16 weeks and another at 26 weeks. I will schedule my other one for next saturday. Im not sure of the limit but i think you get them as often as the doctor wants to check the baby and look for new things. I still get nervous when i go but everything has been fine so far. Im glad they are keeping a close eye on my little one. the best part about it is i get pictures every time. I have them in a book about 7 pics all together.

Re: how many ultrasounds can you get?

I think it depends on your doctor, your insurance and your pregnancy. I think pregnancies that are high risk tend to have more u/s done. I had a total of 5 with ds and so far at 17 weeks I've had 3 and I anticipate 1 or 2 more. That seems like a lot but have seen a specialist both times because of a previous family members unfortunate birth experience. Otherwise I think 2-3 is the norm.
I also have a friend whose dh is a doctor so they do u/s on a regular basis...lucky dogs!

Re: how many ultrasounds can you get?

Being we have delt with infertility I had one at 5wks 7wks 10wks when they seen everything was Ok I had one at 19wks 1d was put on high risk DD's umbilical cord has only one artery insted of the normal 2 so I had one at
19w5ds 20wks4ds I go back to the regular OB at 22wks 5ds don't know if I will get one then but I do know I will at 23wks and then again every 4 weeks or sooner afterwards. If it was going to cause some kind of harm I don't think they would do so many.

Re: how many ultrasounds can you get?

I also went through infertility treattment and my gyne does a u/s every visit. I has an u/s at 5 wks, 8 wks, 10wks, 13wks, 16wks and 19wks. I am now 20 weeks and my next u/s is booked for 23 wks, if they were dangerous my dr would not be doing so many.

Re: how many ultrasounds can you get?

I am 33 weeks and have had about 7 ultrasounds so far, and another one planned for tomorrow. I am considered high-risk though because I'm having twins, so they have me get one every month with a perinatologist. I don't think they would have me get so many if there was any harm with it, especially if I'm high-risk.
