Anyone have low amniotic fluid levels before?

Hello,

My wife is almost 34 weeks and was told 3 days ago that she has a low amount of amniotic fluid. It's at 6cm which is about the min. they'll let you have before delivering.

Has anyone on this board had a similar number and had a good outcome with the baby?? We've been reading that it is very possible that there is something wrong with the kidneys or other complications because of this low level of fluid.

They told her to drink a lot of water and she's having another U/S on Monday. It sounds like they'll take the baby if it's gone down any more. We're debating seeing a specialist again.

They said that the baby is still growing which is a very positive side. I'm looking for people's experience with this. Thanks a lot!

John

Re: Anyone have low amniotic fluid levels before?

i havent had personal experience but i know someone whos water broke at 21 weeks and they kept the baby in there for another 4 weeks. they dont know why it broke there was nothing wrong it just happened. she had to be in the hospital on bed rest cuz it was so early but the point im tryin to make is that by the time she delivered at 25 wks the baby didnt have anymore fluid in there at all. he survived and is about 8 yrs old now and the only problems he has are some learning disabillities from being born so early, the lack of fluid didnt effect him. shes far enough along now that if they do take the baby next week it shouldnt have any problems. dont look stuff up on the internet 9 times outta 10 its just gonna make you worry for no reason. if it was something the drs thought to be serious with the baby they probably would have admitted her instead of sending her home. some women just lose fluid for no reason it doesnt always mean there is a problem.

Re: Anyone have low amniotic fluid levels before?

HI john,
i can defintly relate...I was induced at 35 weeks with low amniotic fluid. I was going for ultrasounds weekly to monitor this, and the last one, it had dropped to 5 cm and I had a C-section. Because his lungs still wern't quite developed and he was breathing pretty heavy...he was put in the special care nursery for 10 days. He is doing very well now with no problems at all. My Dr told me that even if I was 30 weeks, and the fluid was 5 cm, he would deliver the baby...I think because your 34 weeks, things should be fine...I was a wweek ahead of your wife and my son is doing great!!!

The baby needs the fluid while in her belly and if there isn't enough, things could get worse...I would definitly think of delivering your baby, if the fluid has dropped again, just to be safe!!! Your doctor knows best...they are the professionals in this field and know whats best for both your wife and baby!!! Good luck and please let me know the outcome....

Huggs,
Robyn

Re: Anyone have low amniotic fluid levels before?

This happened to my sister-in-law around 30 wks they diagnosed her with low amniotic fluid and was checked very regularly. Although it was low, she did carry her boy to pretty much full term 38 wks and he had no problems, he is now 3 yrs old & adorable!!! I wish I could remember the exact levels, but I think around 5-6cm sounds familiar.
