3hr glucose test

I went this morning for the 3hr test and I will get the results Monday due to the holiday. I starting feeling wozzy around the second hour really faint feeling and dizzy. By the time we got to the 3rd I was shaking, white as a ghost, sweating like crazy, I could hardly stand up I was so weak. They drew the blood and then stuck my finger just to see what it was and why I was getting so sick my sugar was 56 they rushed me out to get something to eat. When I left the nurse said she was pretty sure I didn't have any sugar problems. Was 56 to low for the 3hr test?

Re: 3hr glucose test

in pregnant women, usually below 67 is considered hypoglycemic...I'm assuming you really don't have sugar problems if your body was able to metabolize the sugar that quickly...did they say why that happened?

generally:

fasting should be >90 (i think up to 95 is "acceptable")
1 hr draw >180
2 Hr Draw >155
3 Hr draw >140

Re: 3hr glucose test

The dr didn't say anything it was just the lady in the lab that was doing my blood work that told me there is no way I have high sugar. I do know one thing I was so sick. I was told when I was a teenager that I am hypoglycemic and I have watched my eating making sure I didn't skip meals to keep from feeling like I did today. Dh was getting really worried because he has never seen me get that bad we went to eat and I couldn't stand up to fix my plate he had to do it and I looked like a starved animal eating.
I told them that I was hypoglycemic at the one hour but my sugar was 168 then I don't know if the machine messed up or something but it was crazy high for me. So for the last week I have been checking my sugar twice a day and the highest it has been was 112 and that was after two cokes and a strawberry shake ( I was trying to make it go up to see if it was me or the machine)
I know I will talk to the dr when I go back on the 28th about it.

Re: 3hr glucose test

This hasn't happened to me during a GD test, but I've had this same thing happen to me on several occassions. NO FUN! Just wanted to say that I hope you feel better. I know what you mean about feeling like an animal when eating. When you feel like that, it's like you can't get food in your mouth fast enough. Sorry you had to go through that. Feel better!!!

Re: 3hr glucose test

Tami, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I had a similar experience - when I was pregnant with DD, I actually fainted in the OB office during the 2nd hour. The nurse said it actually isn't uncommon for pregnant women to react that way, and that's why they won't let you leave the office while you are in your waiting period.

Re: 3hr glucose test

I was allowed to leave and come back each hour. I went to the mall and walked around for a bit. I was so glad to get out of the office they keep it so cold I was about to freeze.

Re: 3hr glucose test

HI

I had the same thing happen with both pregnancies and ended up with gestational diabetes in the first and borderline GD in the second. My first I was so sick I almost fainted by the second hour. They had to lay me down on a table and I fell asleep! I was shaking and begging for some water. I thought maybe my sugar was too low too but turns out it was opposite. Not to scare you but I think people with diabetes can have low blood sugar type symptoms as well as high.

Good luck I hope everything is ok

Re: 3hr glucose test

I know when I left my sugar was really low at 56 and the nurse said then that I didn't have anything to worry about with it dropping that low the only thing that could be a problem is I am hypogycemic and that I already know I have been since I was about 15.
I will get my results back tomorrow to be sure.

Re: 3hr glucose test

Wow Tami, I can't believe how low your numbers were in the 3rd hour. I'm glad that you don't have GD and that all the blood testing is over for you. I just went to have my fasting blood taken this morning. It was 81. The nurse said that was good. I came home and had eggs and sausage (the nurse said to eat lots of protein). I have to go back @ 1130 to see do the test again. If the numbers are still good (fingers crossed), I do not have to do the 3 hr.

it's interesting that they let you walk around. when i took all of my glucose tolerance tests in this and my first pregnancy, i was told not to move around too much. the reason is, they want to see how the body metabolizes the glucose without any assistance (i.e. without physical activity).
