I don't have maternity insurance...what are my options??
Hey everyone,
I am currently 11 weeks pregnant, which is a true miracle in itself and DH ad i are thrilled!
HOWEVER....I do not have OB/ maternity coverage with my insurance and was not eligible for it before I even got PG. (I have a pre-existing heart condition, so most insurances avoid dealing with me). My insurance will cover expenses for me for like gestational diabetes or something, but no ultrasounds, B/W, etc.
My DH has insurance and also has health insurance on his policy for a baby AFTER it's born and needs medical care.
Unfortunately, we fall into this in-between category where we won't qualify for medicaid because of our income, but by all means we are not rich people!
I am freaking out here.
For those of you who have been in our situation, what are our options???
I found something on the internet called Maternity Advantage or The Maternity Card.
Does anyone know anything about this??
Please help.
Re: I don't have maternity insurance...what are my options??
I don't know anything about the maternity card thing, but maybe you could try CHIP, they have an adult program. Go to your local county assistance office and they should be able to provide you with some options. They will have the information about CHIP also. Good luck!!
Re: I don't have maternity insurance...what are my options??
I dont know about the Maternity Card either but i do know that in most states a woman who is pregnant automatically qualifies for the states insurance because she is pregnant. Its like state assistance or something. When you have the baby i think you are kicked off but the baby would still be covered until its 5 i think but all states have different rules. Look into that Good luck. And if you find yourself at a dead end just tell them to bill you for ultra sounds and doctor visits as long as you pay them something they cant deny you.
Re: I don't have maternity insurance...what are my options??
you can fill out papers at the hospital for financial assistance and you will either have to pay a percentage of the total or you will be excused from the bills. Go up to admissions before your due and ask for the papers so they can have all that on file and you dont have to deal with it afterwards.
Re: I don't have maternity insurance...what are my options??
Hi bees I cannot offer any assistence b/c I am on the other side of the world, but i just wanted to say that I am glad to hear you are 11 weeks already. I have not seen a post from you in a while and was thinking of you. I hope you and little one are well. Good luck with finding maternity cover, I am sure everything will work out in the end.
Re: I don't have maternity insurance...what are my options??
i am dealing with this too right now and i am about to be covered with my state's coverage. i'm in colorado it's called cover colorado, maybe the state of la has something like it ? it's for coverage for anybody who doesnt qualify for regular health insurance -- for anyone who's been denied.
Re: I don't have maternity insurance...what are my options??
Didn't you have to fill out some health department forms at your first doctor's visit? Here in Florida you fill out forms and then the nurse reviews them and makes a recommendation as to whether you should be referred to the health department and the Early Childhood Coalition for assistance during pregnancy.
It's worth it to the state to get you to have a healthy pregnancy so that everything turns out OK with the baby and they don't have to pay for long term care for a sick child later.
You will probably have to pay for a doctor's visit out of your pocket.
Re: I don't have maternity insurance...what are my options??
Hi everyone!
Thanks for the responses.
I actually haven't been to my first "doctor" visit yet. My first appt is next Monday at 12 weeks. The last time i saw my Fertility specialist doctor was to confirm the pregnancy and that was at 8 weeks. Those visits are always out-of-pocket, so i haven't dealt with the regular doc yet.
Charlene- HELLO! Yep, i've been out of the picture for a few weeks. I know it's stupid, but I felt like if i got too comfortable writing on this board then I would jinx myself and something would happen. I don't know if you remember, but i miscarried last Nov at 11 weeks, so i've been really nervous lately.
I am soooooo happy to see so many familiar "faces" move from the IF board to the Pregnancy Board!!!! I haven't posted, but i have been reading up on everybody and it's amazing how far we have all come!
Meluca - so the Cover Colorado program doesn't have any income restrictions??
Xinerevelle - I will definitely ask as soon as I go in for my appt about health dept forms.

Bees I do remember your m/c last Nov I was so sad for you and DH. I am sure that this pg is going to go to term but I understand how you feel. On the 8th June was a year since my m/c and I was nervous do not ask me why but I just was. I hope you manage to get some maternity cover soon so you can stop worrying. Good luck. Please keep us updated. You are due in Jan 09 right?
Good luck for your appointment on Monday I am looking forward to hearing all about it.
