For lack of a better way of putting it and sorry if this sounds really gross but some people describe it as a big bloody snot, other people however never know if they have lost it or not because it can just dissolve over time. The best way to know if you're dilating is for your doctor to check you but they usually won't do this until about 37-38 weeks.
