Re: February mom's part 3

Hey Kari good to hear from you.I guess your right even before pregnancy the mornings always felt better.I guess thats why they say to weight yourself in the morning. As for my weight I was never really over weight but with the fertility treatments for over a year I gained about 20 to 25 pounds.Well I took a break for a few months and lost 30 pounds right before doing my last IUI.Thank god I did that so I started at 125 pounds at the begining of my pregnancy.Since I am short I always had my curves so yes I had my love handles and I dident notice that they were gone until you mentioned it now............lol. I am sure everyone carries different they also say boys are carried higher so maybe I am having boys.Saying that now I wanted to ask if any of you have a feeling on the gender genders?I have a feeling that at least one of mine is a boy if not both.Just a feeling I have of course I could be dead wrong..........lol.I cant wait until my appointment I swore I wouldent worry about my babies but I cant help it I need that reassurence that they are ok.Ok I went on and on well I will go check in on you on Dec thread.Take care.

Hey Holly thanks for stopping in and thanks for putting my mind at ease I was begining to think something is wrong.Hope all is well have to go check on Nov thread to see how you and little man are doing.Take care.

Lost looks like we are 14 weeks on the same day so when is your due date again?Try not to worry and if you do think its twins maybe you need to get into to see your OB sooner. When is your appointment?Well looking forward to hearing about it.Oh and I cant wait to find out the genders either it will make it that much more real.Ok well take care.Keep us posted.

Re: February mom's part 3

Hey ladies,

Just wanted to add here that I too, have the harder stomach up top, and softer at the bottom. What's that all about?? I think it might be because my uterus is already growing so large that it's just pushing everything around in there, so where I didn't have TOO much fat (my actual waistline), there's not enough padding for it to be soft. Does that make sense?? Lol. Also, so many people have asked me if I'm having twins as well! Like I said before, I'm looking much farther along than 14 weeks (I'll be 15 weeks on Friday!!), but I know I'm not because I've already had an ultrasound that showed just the one.
As for finding out the sex, I am so unsure on what to do! We waited for a suprise with ds and it turned out to be a good idea, because I found that it was really extra motivation during some of the toughest parts of labor. But I am SO curious, I feel like I don't know if I can wait 5.5 more months! Anyway, have a great day everyone!

Re: February mom's part 3

Hi Everyone -- my laptop crapped out last week, and it was only 3 weeks old! argh! So finding time to get to the desktop computer in the office with a 20-month-old opening every drawer and cupboard in here is difficult, to say the least. Hopefully I'll get my laptop back next week and can resume my online life... LOL!

I'm 11w3d (due 2/28) but feel like I'm already 16w. I guess the large fibroids and having a child already helped me pop out already. Unfortunately, I'm not a little woman to begin with (size 18), so I just look even fatter.

I now have my Level 2 u/s and amnio scheduled -- Sept. 18. I'll be 16w5d. They told me I could do it any time after 9/12, but I picked the 18th because it's my birthday -- what a great present! (Finding out the gender, that is... not the giant needle in the belly part... LOL!) Plus, the pressure will be off my DH to do something for my birthday since I'll have to rest after the procedure -- and he usually does a bad job with birthdays/holidays anyway. I just lower my expectations, right? I have to go to Pensacola to have it done -- 2.5 hours away. But they have a GREAT setup with a 42" LCD color monitor on the wall for the parents to watch the u/s. No craning your neck to look at a tiny black and white screen.

I don't remember who asked about heartbeats, but I have read that hb starts slow and goes up to the 190s, then drops back down again in the middle of the 2nd trimester. So don't put much stock in the old wives tales yet.

Oh, and Barton -- the "not being equipped for VBAC" thing is just a risk management (ie - insurance) issue. The numbers requesting it are probably small, so they don't do it. I live in a small town, too, and was surprised when my doctor asked if I wanted to do it. I want to do another c-section (for a variety of reasons, not for convenience) though. Sometimes I wished I lived in a big city with a variety of hospitals to choose from and a plethora of specialists on hand. But, I have two hospitals in my town and one about 45 minutes away (that's the one I'm going to this time -- brand new birth center) and all the perinatologists and neonatologists are 2.5 hours away. I guess I just put up with it.

Glad to hear everyone is doing well. Thank goodness the second trimester is upon us -- babymoons, anyone?!?

Eva-I am actually the opposite of you. The bottom of my stomach is much harder than the top! And I also wanted to tell you that I was convinced I was having 2 girls and obviously I was wrong about that! I actually feel that I am carrying mine low. But, I think you will drive yourself crazy if you keep trying to guess what they are. (Even though it is next to impossible not to think about it!) Hopefully the next few weeks until you find out will go by quickly. Take care of yourself!

Hey Eva, well I think it's only natural that you are worrying about your babies... it's easy to tell yourself not to worry, but we know how much you love and how much you longed for these children. That's why it's only natural! Well as for the gender I think I may follow in Teach's footsteps... I have a "gut" feeling that I've got 3 boys in there, but I'm sure it'll turn out to be 3 girls! What are you thinking? Hey congrats on losing all that weight before getting pregnant. What a great accomplishment, and good timing too!

Hey Christine, I've seen that "popping" happen much sooner with second baby. I'm sure that is exactly what is going on with you! I'll be looking forward to checking in on your birthday next month to see how the amnio went... and of course finding out the gender of your little one!!!

Whiskers, sounds like you are having the same dilemma as me! I just don't know how I'm gonna hold out till birth day! I really am finding that I want to know gender now! LOL

Hope all Feb moms are doing well!

Re: February mom's part 3

Hi ladies,

Just a question to the American mom's: Do you get an ultrasound at every prenatal appointment? I know things work a lot differently here, and I've always wondered that! Also, is an amino done by choice, does it depend on the doctor, history, etc... And what exactly do you find out by doing one? Thanks!

Re: February mom's part 3

Hi Ladies

I am finally feeling slightly better and so surprised about this as m/s lasted up till 24 weeks with DS. In a way i feel better though at the same time i can t help but worry that all s ok......can t wait for my next u/s next week.

Thank you for all your support....and Jeremy just loves getting all these kisses.

I too have my tummy which is harder on top. When i asked my dr re this with DS i was told that it s because all the organs intestines etc get all squashed upwards to make room for the expanding uterus which on the other hand has lots of padding(amniotic fluid etc)so feels softer.

I too seem to have popped and even though i ll be 12 weeks in a few days...yeah...i loo like i am around 20 weeks along.

Wow Kari do you actually think it s 3 boys in there? And Eva 2 boys? well with DS i was sure it was a girl and i had a boy now i feel it s a boy.....and so curious.....will probably start nagging the dr at 16 weeks to see if there s any hint.I feel even more curious then i was with my first.

Whiskers.....locally in normal circumstances only 3 u/s are done throughout a whole preg. Since i am high risk i get an u/s every 2 weeks. Also we do not do amnio etc. We don t even do the glucose testing ........Urine is just checked for glucose with every visit and only if his is ubnormal you are sent for further testing.
Re labour....mine had to be a planned induction at 37 weeks as i am on heparin due to blood issues. My waters broke at 35 weeks and it was a big shock for me. It was holiday weekend and both my Ob/gynea and heamo were on holiday.Locally Ds was the 1st baby to be delivered with my condition that alone was a nightmare. anyway ..i had the gel done which didn t seem to work much. On my 2nd day in the delivery suite they started picotin my contractions started at 9 am till 3.15pm..until that time i was only 2cm dilated and DS s head was not yet in position. I had an epidural done at around midday...though the dr missed and it didn t work. The baby wa sin distress his h/b was really low and he had the cord around his neck. i was examined at 3.20 before being wheeled in for a c section and they saw that the baby s head was in position and i was now 5cm dilated...so they told me to try to push....with 3 pushes he was out. Though was taken to NICU for 2 long weeks. Being separated from him along with baby blues and being surrounded with moms cooing over their babies was just too much for me to handle at that time.
It was tough and i am petrified not re the physical pain...you forget that in a few day.....though i feel that emotionally i was drained...at the same time it s worth it and i know that somehow i ll pull through.

Typically u/s are done at your first appointment (7-9 weeks) for dating purposes and to check viability and then again around 16-20 weeks (the "level 2" u/s). Most insurance companies will only pay for these two unless there is some medical reason compelling more u/s.

For me, I had a second u/s at 10 weeks because my first was at 6 weeks, and at 10w it was just too early for the doppler heartbeat monitor to pickup the hb and measure it. So I had a quick "viability u/s" to check the hb and measure again. Later in pregnancy, because I'm high risk, I'll probably have a second level 2 u/s, plus I'll probably have biophysical profiles again starting at 30 weeks (which includes an u/s and a nonstress test).

As for the amnio, it's offered to all women over 35 or with other high-risk pregnancies. Insurance will cover it and the genetic testing, but most with a 20% coinsurance. Last time it cost me abotu $600 for the genetic testing (my portion). I don't know if insurance companies would cover amnio without some medical reason (high risk pregnancy, family history of genetic problems/birth defects, etc.).

The first part of the amnio is a detailed "level 2" u/s where everything is measured. Then the doctor comes in and uses the u/s to locate a large pocket of amniotic fluid and then extracts some with a large needle. Honestly, it hurts LESS than a novocaine shot at the dentist. There's only nerve endings in your skin and abdominal wall. It's not fun, but it's do-able. Some docs also do a lidocaine shot, but mine told me "then I have to give you TWO needle sticks... do you really want that???"

They take the fluid (a couple of tubes worth, IIRC) and send it to a lab for culturing and analysis. There are three or four tests that come back with 90%-ish accuracy within a week - Down's and a couple of other "trisomy"-type chromosomal defects. They can also say with pretty certain accuracy at this point if it's a boy or girl, though they caution that since there are maternal cells in the fluid it could be wrong (but usually isn't). About a week after that you get the final, 100% accurate results about a whole hosts of potential birth defects and genetic concerns, as well as the gender. They check it because there are some diseases that are gender-specific.

I liked the fact that I knew 100% if something was wrong or not, and whether I needed to be planning more detailed prenatal care. Also, since I live in a more rural area and the nearest neonatologist is 2.5 hours away, I was thinking that if something was wrong I might need to deliver at that hospital instead of the one locally. Some couples decide to abort based upon the defects that might be uncovered in an amnio.

There is a slight risk of miscarriage with an amnio... but I chalk it up to no greater risk than just walking around and accidentally falling off a curb and harming the baby... lol. I'm much too much of a believer in science and technology to NOT take what's offered to me when it comes to tests like this. I chose not to have the CVS because they couldn't tell me with certainty like the amnio does. And it carries the same risk. And if there is a problem there I'd still have to have an amnio. So, I figured, just skip to the end, please.

Hope that helps!

Re: February mom's part 3

eva-my due date is feb 9th. i did talk to my ob about my feelings and she says that there is no reason to have an ultra sound now because i will have one soon enough.( even though she didnt believe me last time and check either) im leaning more towards its not, just for the fact of what are the chances i could actually have twins twice. i think my thought is more towards feeling sad that i lost my last pregnancy. i dont know if that makes any sense, and not saying that having twins this time would replace the ones i lost. i dont know im just gonna stop while im ahead. or think i am ahead.

as for gender i am feeling that its a girl along with everyone else. my mom is so sure she tried to get me to buy a pink baby book today.(of course i didnt)

i think dh and i have figured out a name (at least for now) just a first.. we are thinking Faith.. girls names are all i get to think of, if we have a boy dh wants it to be a 3rd... larry III not lawrence but larry.. who names thier kid just larry...grr but it makes dh happy so its worth it right?? haha
anyone else thinking of names?

Re: February mom's part 3

Thanks for the answers to my q's, ladies! Here they offer an amino test too, I just didn't know that's what it was called. And I think they offer it to everyone, because I was 23 during my last pregnancy, and it was my first one, not high risk, and it was offered to me.

As for gender, I'm thinking mine might be a girl as well! I could be dead wrong, but I've had a gut feeling from the beginning. I had that same feeling with ds (that he was a boy), and I was right! For names, we're going with Maison Smyth for a girl, and still trying to come up with a boy name we like as much as Liam (my ds)!
