Gestational Diabetes?

Has anyone in here ever been diagnosed with GD, but never saw a specialist? I have been told that i failed my one hour glucose test i never went to take the 3 hour and i never saw a diabetic specialist. I do feel fine and only have about 5 more weeks left in my pregnancy.

I am trying to get an appointment with the diabetic specialist but she is out until the 11th of the month.

Do you guys think that things will be ok. What if i go in labor without seeking help of even finding out for sure if i have GD. Are there any high risks?

Re: Gestational Diabetes?

Yes, there are some risks. First of all, your baby could grow to be quite large and there is no way you could deliver vaginally. Secondly, your baby could become hypoglycemic as soon as the baby is detached from you, which will require medication. Not to mention that you could also have problems if you did not treat your gestational diabetes. I would suggest getting that 3 hour test as soon as possible to see if you are at risk.

I am now also doing weekly non-stress tests because of the GD to make sure that the baby is progressing correctly.

Good luck.

Re: Gestational Diabetes?

you definately need to do the 3 hr. the risk of preeclampsia is about 50% higher in women with GD and that can be life threatening to you and the baby. not to mention that when you have GD and you dont control it and your blood sugar stays to high for to long it slightly increases the chance of stillbirth. its still very rare but i know i wouldnt want to take any chance at all of that happening. there is also an increased risk of jaundice, preterm labor, macrosomia that could lead to shoulder dystocia, and hypoglycemia. i couldnt control mine with just my diet so now im on insulin 3 times a day and they are inducing me somewhere around 37-38 wks just to be safe. i dont want to scare you or anything but if you do have GD and you dont control it it can hurt the baby. until you can do the 3 hr you should start following a diabetic diet just in case. the one they gave me is like this:

breakfast- 45 carbs
snack- 15 carbs
lunch- 60 carbs
snack- 15 carbs
dinner- 60 carbs
snack - 15 carbs

each is 2 hrs apart. yours may be a little different but it will probably be similar

Re: Gestational Diabetes?

I went to take the three hour today. The specialist called be back yesterday and told me that she would try to queeze me in on monday morning meanwhile to have lesser carbs and no sweets it's been less than 48 hours and its killing me to top it off i had to fast for the three hour test. so it was like no midnight snacks for me.....lol. i cant wait till it's all back to normal and al i got to deal with is the headaches of baby's cry. Good luckto u too and thanks alot. since your last comment i feel like i accomplished alot by talking to the dr and making myself get up early to take the three hour.
