34 week appointment today with some concerns...

So I had my 34 weeks appointment today. As you may or may not know, our daughter has a single umbilical artery, which can possibly cause preterm labor or low birth weight. These of course are just possibilites and not certain to happen. Anyway, everything has been going fine with my pregnancy besides the SUA until today's appointment. I am measuring two weeks behind schedule, so even though I am 34 weeks I am only measuring at 32 weeks. The doctor asked me how much my first daughter weighed when she was born which was 6 pounds 11 ounces. He said maybe because she was a small baby that this one will be too, but just to be sure he wants me to come in for an ultrasound later on today. I guess my questions and or concerns are as follows. I posted yesterday about how I thought I had possibly lost my mucus plug. Still not sure if that is what it was or not, but the concensus seems to think that it was. Anyway, apparently that is not a big deal anyway unless I was having contractions. HOWEVER, my mom keeps telling me lately that I look like I am carrying really low all of the sudden. And I know I've read that when the baby drops, you can measure the same at each appointment after. So IF the baby has dropped, can they tell that by ultrasound? I was in the doctor at 32 weeks and measuring just perfect he said, and now all of the sudden, I am two weeks behind. Like I haven't grown since my last appointment (even though the weight is still packing on. ) So maybe the baby has dropped and that is why it seems I am measuring behind? And if so, could this have caused the possible loss of the mucus plug? And one more question....if the baby continues to measure small, what do they do about that anyway? I mean, is there some kind of action that can be taken or is just something you can't do anything about? Sorry for all the questions....I am just a little confused now because everything seemed to be going fine two weeks ago and now I am not so sure....

Re: 34 week appointment today with some concerns...

I measured small with DS and he was a 7 pound 21inch baby so I wouldn't really be to worried even tho I was with him.

At my last appt we talked about the "what ifs". If the ultrasounds show that she is not growing and stuff like that. He told me if for some reason the ultrasound showed a slow down in growth that they would admit me to the hospital for bed rest and start steroid shots to help develop her lungs and after a week or so they would do a c-section and take her. When I went yesterday he was taking her Sept.24 five weeks ahead of time to make sure that we didn't run into in complications but we talked and being I'm not having any problems (yet) he would wait and scheduled it for Oct.24 and if I go into labor before that he wasn't worried. I was also told to watch for all signs of preterm labor If I start cramping to go to the ER if anything odd happens go to the ER.
So if your ultrasound shows she's not growing they might go ahead and start you or the steroid shots to help her lungs but your 34 weeks the baby should be fine she would only be 6 weeks early just a week earlier than what they was taking mine. My cousin had hers at 32 weeks he spend 2.5 weeks in the hospital just to get him to the 5lb mark and he is fine a healthy 4 month old now.
Please let me know how the ultrasound goes I will be checking back often the rest of the day.

Re: 34 week appointment today with some concerns...

Tami,
Thanks so much for your info, it was really helpful. Unfortunately, they ended up not scheduling the ultrasound until Thursday so I have to wait, which of course I am sure you know is truly annoying!!! I sat around all day waiting for them to call me and tell me what time be back there and finally got mad and called them. That is when they informed me that it was scheduled for Thursday. Guess it's a good thing that I called!!! Anyway, as soon as I find out what they have to say Thursday I will post and let you know. And again, thanks for your advice etc. It really helped!!!

Re: 34 week appointment today with some concerns...

Tami,
If you read this, I was just writing to let you know how the ultrasound went. They said average size is 50th percentile and right now she in the 34th percentile. However, she said that they aren't concerned unless the baby is below the 10th percentile and she is no where near that so not to worry. She weighs 4 pounds 8 ounces right now. I looked in a pregnancy book I have and it said that at 34 weeks the baby would weigh about 5 pounds, so it looks like she is just about a half a pound smaller. My first daughter weighed 6 pounds 11 ounces when she was born, so I am thinking this little girl will probably be around the same size. I don't mind as long as she is healthy and she appears to be doing great. The u/s tech was laughing because of how active she is. She kept asking me if she was always that active which she pretty much is. She also showed me that the baby was practicing her breathing. She tooks tons of breaths and we watched, it was really cool. She tried getting a look at her face but she said that the baby's head was down so low that she couldn't. Wonder if she will come early at all? Well I just wanted to let you know that everything seems to be just fine with our "little" girl. I am so relieved!

Re: 34 week appointment today with some concerns...

I have been checking in all day to see how you was doing. I am so glad everything seems to be going good. Atleast you know if for some reason she comes a couple weeks early she will be atleast 5lbs. The specialist I was seeing said that most babies with SUA has a low birth weight but he said anything under 7lbs is consider low. He also said most babies that have SUA usually only weight 4.5 to 5lbs. My last appt was 4 weeks ago and I was only 1.5 lbs from 4lbs so it looks like both of our girls will be bigger than what they say. Yours still has 6 weeks left to grow and I got 9weeks I'm thinking we both gonna have healthy over 6lb babies.
I go for a 4D ultrasound at 3:30 tomorrow I am so excited to see her. And I go Sept.2 for an ultrasound to check her growth again but this time I am doing it at my OB office and not at the fetal medicine clinic and he said he does this scan for all 32 week babies so I'm not getting it done for any special reasoning he is treating me like all the other women now.
Please keep me updated on whats going on I kinda feel like I know you since we have had so much in common over the last few months it's been really nice to talk to someone that completely understands what I'm taking about and stressing about.

Re: 34 week appointment today with some concerns...

Yeah me too! Although I would never wish a complication on anyone's pregnancy, I have to say that I was relieved to find someone else out there having a baby with SUA. I think you are right, we are both going to have healthy babies, maybe they just won't be huge. Which honestly is fine by me. Like I said, my first daughter weighed six pounds eleven ounces, which I guess by today's standards is considered on the small side, but in my eyes she was perfect so it didn't matter. And she was healthy in every way so that is what matters most. I hope your 3D goes well. I had one during my first pregnancy and they are so cool. I haven't had one this time and probably won't. It's kind of disappointing because I remember seeing my first daughter during the 3D and you could totally see what she looked like. It was really cool. So yes, let's keep in touch through the rest of our pregnancies and keep each other updated.
