This is probably a stupid question but....

This is my second pregnancy. I am 36 weeks today and had my first pelvic exam to see if I am dilated etc. I am 2 cm dilated, which I was kind of surprised about. With my first daughter I stayed at one forever it felt like, and the day I was in labor I had an appointment and was only 3 while in labor to start off. So, again, I guess I was just a bit surprised that I was already 2 cm. Anyway, on to the stupid question. You have to contract to dilate, right? So if I am dilated, even though it's only 2 cm's, how come I haven't felt any contractions? This never really occured to me the first time around but I started thinking about it today and it didn't make sense to me.

I know with my 1st, I was @ 1-2 cen. and never really knew it... You can go from 0-3 cen. and not feel anything. Everyone has a different level of being uncomfortable and the contractions may have been there, you just did not feel them.

Re: This is probably a stupid question but....

Hi Delia,

I agree with Skyy. When my sister had her baby, she was 4 cm dilated for about a month before actually going into labor, and she said she didn't feel any contractions (until a couple days before "real" labor began). Also, I think braxton hicks can cause dilation as well, so if you've been having any of those, that could be part of the reason you're already at 2cm.

Re: This is probably a stupid question but....

Hey Tami! At my last u/s two weeks ago she weighed 4 pounds 8 ounces so she was about a half of a pound smaller than the "average" 5 pounds for 34 weeks. However the doctor said that this still WELL within the normal range and not to worry. He thinks she will end up being about the size my first daughter was at birth....6 pounds 11 ounces. I am going to start as of this coming Monday having a weekly Biophysical Profile done. I guess just to make sure all is well. I am getting excited and just hope she comes out perfect just like her sister!!! How are you doing and feeling? I am sorry, I am sure you've said, but what is your due date?

Re: This is probably a stupid question but....

Tami,
That is really funny because at my 34 week appointment I was only measuring 32 weeks, which is why they sent me for an u/s. She weighed exactly 4 pounds 8 ounces, which is what she should've weighed at 32 weeks. Looks like your little girl is right on track with growth, that's awesome. I hope your contractions stop....that's got to be stressing you out!

Re: This is probably a stupid question but....

when I was at the hospital all hooked up to the machine and watching my contractions go up all I could do was cry. It scares me so bad when they start but the good part is I'm not dialated at all and the cervix is still long but that could change if they dont' stop.
The reason they think she is going to be big is she gained alittle over 2lbs in 4wks and they said now is when her weight is going to start really going up suppose to be 1/2 pound a week. My stomach measurements was off to it was bigger by a week.

I get on the computer every night to see if you have posted anything I know your getting close my B-day is Sept 14. but your due at the end of the month right?

Re: This is probably a stupid question but....

Yeah I am due at on the 30th. That is really weird, my birthday is September 13th!!! I am sure it was scary having contractions but try not to worry. Again, even though you don't want it, if she were born now I am sure she'd do wonderfully. I am hoping that the Biophysical Profile goes ok that I am having on Monday. It makes me nervous....apparently there is a score from 0-10. I hate tests and scores!!! I just hope she is still doing ok in there, you know? I mean all of the tests in the world can't be completely sure that she is ok. It just makes me nervous and the closer I get to delivering, the more nervous I become. I remember when my first daughter was born, she had two holes in her heart. When she first came out I was so scared that something would be wrong with her. That is how I am feeling now, just want to know that everything is ok. I always like to keep up with your posts too, and will make sure to even after I have the baby. I just hope everything goes ok for both of us!!!!

Re: This is probably a stupid question but....

I know what your talking about with the closer we get the more nervous I get too. I know that all the test say everything is Ok but like you said all the test in the world doesn't make it easier not after reading all the stuff that could be wrong. No one has said anything to me about the biophysical profile but they might later on I'm like you on the test and scores don't really like them. They haven't started nonstress test yet for some reason I was told that I would start them at 30 weeks so I asked but still haven't started them. You don't have much longer before she will be here and you can see her and know that she is perfect in every way.

When I had Cody I was so happy to just finally have him then the motherly thing hit me and I was worried something might be wrong with him he too had a hole in his heart it didn't need surgery to fix. So I am worried about it this time to with Ava heart conditions is heritary in my family my brothers twins one of them had a hole and she had to have surgery to fix it and there are several other family members down the line with the same problems so my son and niece go to a heart specialist for regular check ups.
Did your DD have to have surgery to fix it? How is she doing now? Was they able to see it on u/s before she was born?

Re: This is probably a stupid question but....

Tami,
Yeah, they discovered the hole in her heart by u/s at 20 weeks. The reason they were looking for it is because I was born with a hole in my heart and my husband's brother was born with a heart defect as well (much worse than what I had) Mine never had to have anything done, and closed by the time I was one. After Ella was born I took her to Children's and they said that the hole wasn't where they originally thought, but that she did have it...and not only one but two! However, they are really small and would never require surgery. She just went for her one year check up a few weeks ago at Children's and they said they are still open but not a problem and to just come back when she is three. She has had no problems that anyone can see so it looks like she is doing fine in spite of them. When I went in for my 20 week u/s this time around the main thing they wanted to check was this baby's heart. They did and found everything to be ok and I was very happy. Then there was the "However" and they told me about the SUA. I was thinking, of course we couldn't get through this without some kind of problem. It still makes me a little nervous because with Ella they said she had one hole in a certain spot and were wrong because it wasn't where they thought it was and she had two, not one. So you never know. I am just trying to be as calm as possible and reassure myself that everything is going to be just fine, just like the first time around.

Re: This is probably a stupid question but....

They never said anything about Cody having a hole in his heart during my pregnacy but when he was born they could here a whistling when they listened to his heart so they did an U/S and seen the whole. They said it was small and would grow up. He is 8 now and just went to a heart specialist a few months ago and it's still there.
With my niece they never seen it either again they found it after she was born but hers had to have surgery it was affecting her growth. She was a twin and as the months past you could see it more and more on her size but she had the surgery and with in a month she was as big as her sister and now you can't tell them apart.

This time around I am learning something new that I have never done to Sit down and don't try and do everything to let other people do things for me Sounds easy but it is so hard for me to do. I am so use to doing everything for everyone.

Re: This is probably a stupid question but....

Believe me, I know what you mean. I have been forcing myself to sit down more too. It's hard because it makes me feel like I am not contributing like I should be but my DH is great about taking care of things. He practically won't let me do anything at this point because he wants me to be as comfortable as possible. I will make sure to post on Monday and let you know how the Biophysical Profile goes. WISH ME LUCK!!!!
