Just what I needed. My 4.5 year old was diagnosed with strepth throat today and the pediatrician said it is highly likely that Robert (4 weeks old today ) will also get it and will probably end up being hospitalized . I always thought that bf newborns had a natural immunity but, the ped says no. My middle son has had a 103.6 fever and that is with alternating motrin and tylenol, he is so sick and his throat and head hurt him so bad. Between the baby and my middle child, I don't know which one to take care of. I just hope nobody else catches it. Please everyone pray that this doesn't go to anyone else in my family (I hate being couped up inside, I am slightly claustrophobic).
Sorry for all the whining!
Could someone else watch the baby for a couple of days until your house is germ free? Another thing someone I know in you same situation did was get some of those face and nose masks and make the sick kids wear them. It filters the germs and it works. 3 people in the family had strep and they all wore them and the baby didn't get it. Also keep a disinfectant spray around and spray....spray...spray.
my ped says they do tend to have immunity. my 2 older kids were sick around my youngest numerous times and she didn't get it.my oldest had scarlet fever(strep throat with rash)for 2 months and nobody else got it,my youngest wasn't born yet.she slept in bed with me, cause she was so sick, and i didn't get it.hand washing is very important, for you especially.
really watch your child that has it, someone just told me of akid dying from it before Christmas. i had to bring my daughter to a specialist when she got it cause the antibiotics weren't working. the specialist said untreated or reoccuring strep could cause heart damage.thats rare though, the antiobiotic usually work.
After only 12 hours of antibiotics, I have a different child. He has only a low grade temp of 99 to 101 now and is very active other than I am making him take a nap (yesterday, I could barely wake him up).
I can't send the baby off as I am bf and I don't have anyone who I would send him off to for that long of a time frame.
As for the mask idea, I asked the ped and she said that would harm the child who is sick as the warmth of the air inside the mask would actually keep the illness festering longer???? I am trying to keep him away from the baby which is working but, my dh says he feels like he is coming down with something and he has always held the baby when he came home.
Will keep trying. So far so good! At least the 6 year old looks healthy and he shares a room with the 4 year old!
