BF and period

I am bf'ing and I think that I also got my period today. I am only 4 weeks postpartum and with my other 2 I didn't get a period till after I stopped bf. Everything I read says that non-bf mothers get their period 4 to 6 weeks postpartum and that bf mothers normally do not get it back or won't till 8 to 10 weeks postpartum. Does anyone know if this is considered normal. My OB is not in till Monday. Thanks everyone.

Re: BF and period

Hi Maglib,
With my first baby I was exclusively bf and I got my period at five weeks. With my second I didn't get it till seven months...

I read somwhere that it might have a lot to do with body fat, The more body fat you have the sooner you start. I definately was in much better shape after my second baby. Thats just a theory though, not a fact.

Re: BF and period

That might make some sense as I was overweight before this pregnancy and although I lost all the pg weight except for 3 pounds (which are all in my chest!), I am still 163 pounds! I was only 130 with my first and 140 with my second. I am 5'6" so my ideal weight s/b 125. I wonder if I lose more weight will I stop getting my pd? That was the one positive note on bf that I will surely miss!

Re: BF and period

Maglib,
I'm not sure if losing weight will stop your periods. I do agree with you, not having af is a wonderful "side effect" of bf!
